The dribble belts are rough surface rubber belts set at an incline and rolling uphill(on the top surface).... We used a total of 5 dribble belts which are fed in series to result in a cumulative cleaning/sorting process. The first belt receives the "strippage" from the primary conveyor belt under the stripping section. The [hop] cones roll "downhill", while the leaves and less round debris such as branches stick to the rough surface and are drawn uphill along with some of the cones that don’t roll down the first dribble belt. Whatever hasn’t rolled down the first belt is delivered to the second where another round of separation takes place. This continues over 5 belts with the "trash" being deposited over the top of the last dribble belt onto a trash conveyor while the cones that come off the bottom of each dribble belt are deposited onto a primary hop conveyor.

A vigorous deep-rooted perennial herb introduced from Eurasia that reproduces by seed, by thick vertical roots and by cylindral horizontal roots 0.25-0.5 cm in diameter.

Perennial sow thistle grows on a single stem, branching near the top. The branches end in large, loose, clusters of yellow, dandelion-like flowers. Leaves vary in shape and have weak prickles on the edges. Upper leaves clasp the stem directly. Mature plants contain a bitter milky juice and grow to 1. 5 m tall. Annual sow thistle has smaller flowers. [It] is an aggressive, creeping weed that can severely reduce yields in cultivated fields.

Chelation (from Greek, chelè, meaning claw) is the process of reversible binding (complexation) of a ligand - the chelant, chelator, chelating agent, sequestering agent, or complexing agent - to a metal ion, forming a metal complex, the chelate. The term is generally reserved for complexes in which the metal ion is bound to two or more atoms of the chelating agent, although the bonds may be any combination of coordination or ionic bonds.

Simply put, the pressure chamber ... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf (or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem (the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water: a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar (1 Bar = 14.5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal (1 MPa = 10 bars).

A cap-sealing method based on the high-frequency heating of the cap and its inner seal, when placed on their container, in order to enhance tamper evidence and freshness protection.

A typical induction innerseal consists of a pulp board liner, a layer of wax, aluminum foil, and a polymer that is compatible with the lid of the plastic container. As the container and cap pass under the induction coil, a varying magnetic field heats the aluminum foil, which melts the wax and polymer, sealing it to the lip of the container. Thus, the innerseal leaves an hermetic layer of foil and polymer coating on the top of the bottle. If the foil seal is broken, any tampering is immediately apparent to the consumer.

Air Float Dryer.... principle of operation.... The pulp web is carried in a number of passes through a chamber in which heated air is used both for drying and for supporting the web. Capital and operating costs are similar to the steam cylinder system, but most pulp producers favor the air float dryer because it is easier to operate and maintain. In the earlier models of the air dryer, the pulp web is carried on mechanical conveyors and hot air is blown between the passes. The later designs incorporate true air impingement above and below the web; this principle provides much higher evaporation rates and eliminates the mechanical conveyor. Typically, the pulp web enters at the top, makes a number of horizontal passes turning around rollers at each end, and leaves at the bottom of the dryer at the opposite end.

Reactors. The most widely applied reactors for gasification of biomass are the moving bed types and the fluidized bed types.... Moving bed-counter current. The moving bed reactor is a vertical shaft through which the biomass flows slowly downwards as a packed bed. The reactor has a gastight feeding system at the top and an ash removal system at the bottom. The moving bed reactor is used for biomass having dimensions of 1 to 10 cm. Three sub-types can be distinguished : cocurrent, countercurrent and cross-current reactors. The countercurrent moving bed gasifier is the most simple reactor type. The gas, produced in the reduction zone, leaves the reactor together with the pyrolysis products and the steam from the drying zone. The producer gas is rich in hydrocarbons and it has a temperature of about 400°C. The gas can be used for direct heating purposes. If it is to be used for electricity generation by internal combustion engines, it has to be cleaned thoroughly.

[The acid hydrolysis of wood]. The "Natta process" uses hydrochloric acid as the catalyst. The raw material used is moistened with dilute hydrochloric acid and is fed continuously into the top of a vertically arranged reactor. Superheated steam at a temperature of 190° to 200°C is injected at the bottom of the reactor, passes through the material in a countercurrent stream, and leaves the digester at the top, taking the furfural with it. The condensate contains only a small amount of hydrochloric acid and this is neutralized before the furfural is purified. The process operates continuously, uses considerably less steam and acid than the sulfuric acid process described above, and gives furfural yields of 70% to 80% of the theoretical amount.... The process also permits the recovery of the acetic acid formed as a by-product.
