CONT

Revibration of concrete an hour or two after initial consolidation, but before setting, is sometimes needed in order to weld successive casting together. This helps to remove any cracks, voids, or weak areas created by settlement or bleeding, particularly around reinforcing steel or other embedded materials.

CONT

Revibration. A second delayed vibration after most of the bleeding has taken place, but before initial set has begun, will help to further densify the concrete and remove additional bugholes from the face of the concrete. Revibration of the top lift will prevent the darkening of the last lift and lessen the large amount of air bugholes normally found there.

... the height to which the forks can lift without elevating the mast.

CONT

[Fork Truck Construction.] An important operational aspect of mast assemblies is freelift. Freelift is defined as the vertical distance forks can raise above the floor before the mast begins to extend from its collapsed height.

CONT

[Lift trucks. ] "Free lift" is the amount of movement the carriage can make before the cylinder yoke starts lifting the mast. A standard upright usually has just enough free lift to raise the load off the floor so the truck can go through a doorway without the top of the mast striking the door.

OBS

The amount of freelift available is dependent on the mast and truck design. Freelift may range from only a few inches on some models to over 60 in. (1500 mm) on the man-up turret truck. Most manufacturers offer trucks with either standard or "high" freelift available.

OBS

CONT

DEF

Hard snow surface that breaks when stepped upon.

CONT

breakable crust-A dreadful surface over which to travel. A layer of snow that has hardened on top and sunk below. Walking across such an area means that you lift your foot and place it as for a normal step, but just a few inches higher, it takes most of your weight, but as you lift your weight onto it, at the last second the crust breaks and you are standing there with both feet a few inches below the surface crust. As much effort as walking up stairs just to stay on the level, going up hill is doubly hard.

Breakable crust exists at all elevations. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

Golf discs have little in common with the bulky freestyle Frisbees you’ve thrown at the beach. Each type of disc weighs about the same (generally between 150 and 180 grams, or 5 to 6 ounces), but golf discs are smaller in diameter and made of denser plastic, with a tendency to have a narrower edge for greater aerodynamic performance. The current world record toss stands at 712 feet.

CONT

The pressure of the moving air against the surface is inversely proportional to its speed, so that the net result is that there is a lower pressure on the top of the disc than on the bottom, thereby imparting the aerodynamic lift that helps the disc fly. A golf disc in this sense is a kind of airfoil.

CONT

The top of the inversion layer is where the air reaches its highest temperature. The air below that level cannot ascend. (Because each parcel of air below has a cooler temperature, it is therefore denser, and gravity keeps it trapped in place.)

CONT

Warm air has formed a layer on top of cooler surface air. This layer is called the temperature inversion. This means that temperatures actually rise as we measure farther up into the air. Little or no mixing occurs and concentrations of atmospheric particulate pollution and vapors are trapped below the level where temperatures again decrease with altitude. This point is referred to as the top of the inversion. Inversions can occur at the surface or aloft in the atmosphere.

CONT

... a hot-air or gas balloon attempting to descend through a subsidence inversion will find, first, a possible bump or hesitancy of the balloon to "bust" through the top of the inversion. Once through the top of the inversion, the balloon may require much more lift than was required above the inversion top to maintain the same rate of descent.

His experiments led to the development of the cambered aerofoil, a feature that generated much more lift than a flat surface. Put simply, a curved wing surface causes the air traveling over the upper surface to move faster, and travel further, than the air passing along the lower surface of the wing. The air passing over the top surface has a slightly reduced pressure. The greater pressure below the wing exerts an upwards force, called lift, and within certain limits increases with airspeed.

When the clay has been opened up it is lifted up to form the walls of the pot, using inward and upward pressure from the left palm, and lifting and squeezing pressure from the right thumb and finger. The hands are firmly locked together for support.

OBS

The left hand is used inside the pot and the fingertips of as many fingers (not thumb) as you can get into the pot are pressed gently against the base of the wall. The right hand is used outside the pot, and the index finger is crooked so that the flat section between the first and second knuckles can be pressed down on the wheel-head. The side of the index finger then will naturally fit against the wall or side of the pot. Both hands can be drawn upwards together.
