1, record 2, French, - arc%20%C3%A0%20calebasse

A topping off, or topping out, ceremony is a tradition that began years ago [among] Scandinavians, who believed their gods lived in trees. The dribble belts are rough surface rubber belts set at an incline and rolling uphill(on the top surface).... We used a total of 5 dribble belts which are fed in series to result in a cumulative cleaning/sorting process. The first belt receives the "strippage" from the primary conveyor belt under the stripping section. The [hop] cones roll "downhill", while the leaves and less round debris such as branches stick to the rough surface and are drawn uphill along with some of the cones that don’t roll down the first dribble belt. Whatever hasn’t rolled down the first belt is delivered to the second where another round of separation takes place. This continues over 5 belts with the "trash" being deposited over the top of the last dribble belt onto a trash conveyor while the cones that come off the bottom of each dribble belt are deposited onto a primary hop conveyor. 2, record 6, English, - dribble%20belt

According to... the "Standard Proctor test"... a sample of soil is dried, pulverized and separated into two fractions by a no. 4 sieve. About 6 lb of the finer fraction are moistened with a small quantity of water and thoroughly mixed to produce a damp aggregate that is then packed, in three equal layers, into a cylindrical container of specified dimensions. Each layer is compacted by 25 blows of a standard tamper that is allowed to fall from a height of 1 ft. When the cylinder has been filled and struck off level at the top, the weight and the water content of the damp soil of the container are determined. By means of these quantities, the dry density can be computed. In a similar manner the dry density is determined for successively damper mixtures of the aggregate, until the dry density after compaction decreases conspicuously with increasing water content. A curve is plotted showing the relation between dry density and water content. 3, record 17, English, - standard%20Proctor%2Dtest

Unlike the STM, the AFM [Atomic Force Microscope] can scan nonconducting samples. It can do this because it uses optical technology, direct contact, and a laser, to sense the position of the tip in relation to the sample. The tip is very sharp and protrudes from a small flexible cantilever. The laser reflects off the top side of the tip and is directed to a split photodiode. The height of the surface of the sample deflects the cantilever causing the position of the laser on the photodiode to change. The difference in voltage from the photodiode elements provide a "picture" of the surface. 6, record 19, English, - atomic%20force%20microscope

Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. Air stripping is a technology in which volatile organic compounds(VOCs) are transferred from extracted water to air. Typically, air stripping takes place in a packed tower(known as an air stripper) or an aeration tank. The air stripper includes a spray nozzle at the top of the tower. It sprays groundwater that has been pumped to the surface over the packing in the column. As the water descends, air is forced up through the column, stripping off the volatile compounds.... Air strippers transfer contaminants from one medium to another. There is no destruction of the contaminant. Consequently, the risks of emitting pollutants into the air must be carefully evaluated. Often, the air stream(or off-gas) is treated before it is emitted to the atmosphere. 2, record 21, English, - air%20stripping

Attention should now be directed to a "dryer pocket". Paper drying can best be visualized as a repetitive two-phase process. In phase 1, the sheet picks up sensible heat while in contact with the steam cylinder. In phase 2, the sheet flashes off steam in the open draw between the top and bottom cylinders, thus causing the sheet to spontaneously cool and become ready to pick up sensible heat again. 1, record 33, English, - dryer%20pocket

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment(ASTEX) was conducted in June 1992 off North Africa, in the area of Azores and Madeira Islands. ASTEX was based on two islands and several ships in an area where the total cloud cover(mostly stratocumulus) ranges from 50-60%. The region is dominated by low-level clouds with moderate optical thicknesses, from about 1 to 10 on average. The optically thinner(more highly broken) clouds generally have cloud tops below the 800 mb level). The optically thicker clouds have lower top pressures down to about 700 mb. The region is characterized by broken low cloudiness and strong gradients of low level cloud amount. Satellite studies show cloud conditions ranging from solid stratocumulus decks to broken trade cumulus. The region is not directly influenced by continental effects, and islands provide suitable sites for surface observations and aircraft operations. ASTEX was thus able to address issues related to the stratocumulus to trade-cumulus transition and cloud-mode selection. 2, record 35, English, - Atlantic%20Stratocumulus%20Transition%20Experiment

The knee-bolter was a steel topped table on a track, with a wide slot in the front to admit the knee-bolter saw. The top of the table was level with the deck so the operator stood in a hole... The saw was vertical and was sixty inches in diameter, ran at 600 RPM and had sixty large, mean-looking, inserted teeth. The table had an arm that stuck out to fit between the operator's legs, hence the name "knee bolter. "The operator would wrestle the block onto the table, and, with his legs, push table and block into the saw, rotating the block so as to peel off the bark. If there was a large knot in the block, he would saw directly through it, so the knot would be the part of the block that would necessarily be wasted in the final cutting of the shingles. 1, record 36, English, - knee%2Dbolter

Fixers can be reused for a certain number of rolls of film. As the fixer gets old with use, the fixing time will need to be increased accordingly. These times will depend on the fixer and the type of film. With most traditional films, you can tell if the film is under-fixed when the film base is cloudy instead of clear. Over-fixing, however, can cause staining. Pour the fixer back into its bottle and wash the film with the top of the film container off under running water for one minute. 1, record 38, English, - under%2Dfixed

Dr. Karl Clark, a scientist working for the Alberta Research Council, developed and patented the hot water extraction technique... Oil sand is mixed with hot water creating a slurry. Early methods used large tumbler drums to condition the slurry. Today, hydrotransport pipelines are used to condition and transport the oil sand from the mine to the extraction plant. The slurry is fed into a separation vessel where it separates into three layers-sand, water and bitumen. The bitumen is then skimmed off the top to be cleaned and processed further. Secondary recoveries are made with the middlings zone of the separation vessels to return the smaller quantities of bitumen that would otherwise flow to the settling ponds. Ph levels and temperature are key variables in the process. 2, record 40, English, - hot%20water%20extraction%20process

2, record 40, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20d%27extraction%20%C3%A0%20l%27eau%20chaude

Internal frames are usually parallel aluminium staves in channels on the back of the pack. These are thinner and more flexible than frame staves found on external frames, and are usually either independent or only attached to one another at the top, so they flex and move with the wearer far more than is generally the case with external frames. This leads to greater freedom of movement, and also means that the pack body is closer in to the wearer's back, enabling the centre of mass to be held closer to the wearer's own. This isn’t as comfortable standing around as a high load, but it's a lot easier to balance it, especially off the trail in rougher stuff. 2, record 41, English, - internal%20frame

9, record 43, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20d%27abattage%20par%20chambres%2Dmagasins

Simply put, the pressure chamber ... is just a device for applying air pressure to a leaf (or small shoot), where most of the leaf is inside the chamber but a small part of the leaf stem (the petiole) is exposed to the outside of the chamber through a seal. The amount of pressure that it takes to cause water to appear at the petiole tells you how much tension the leaf is experiencing on its water: a high value of pressure means a high value of tension and a high degree of water stress. The units of pressure most commonly used are the Bar (1 Bar = 14.5 pounds per square inch) and the megapascal (1 MPa = 10 bars). 4, record 44, English, - pressure%20bomb

The general practice in Canada is to use only one cleaning passage for the blend. The first cleaning machine is a milling separator, similar to the receiving separator used in the elevator, but more precise in its ability to separate impurities that are larger and smaller than wheat. The top sieve has large perforations about six millimetres in diameter and the bottom sieve has holes two millimetres in diameter. As the grain passes through the machine, large impurities such as corn, soybeans and unthreshed wheat are removed by the top screen, while the finer bottom sieve allows small impurities such as mustard seed, buckwheat and sand to pass through for separate collection. The partially cleaned wheat tails over the finer sieve. As it falls off the end of the sieve, it is aspirated by air currents that remove chaff and dust to a separate outlet. 1, record 52, English, - milling%20separator

They were built with 5. 1 by 15. 2 centimetre wooden planks and 5. 1 by 10. 2 centimetre wooden planks. The 2 x 6's were placed flat side up, one on top of each other and securely nailed with spikes to give strength. This procedure was used for the lower part of the elevator; 2 x 4's were then used in a similar manner until the top of the elevator was reached. This method of construction became known as cribbing. 1, record 55, English, - cribbing%20method

1, record 55, French, - technique%20de%20construction%20en%20caisson

It [blocking pattern] persists from one to several weeks.... there are three kinds of blocks :... a high-over-low block in which the flow splits, one branch taking a poleward excursion and the other branch an equatorward excursion. Any traveling storms that approach the block from the west, tend to weaken and go either over the ridge(top of the block) or pass through the trough on the south side.... An "omega" block so named because the flow about this block resembles the Greek letter "Omega". Cyclonic(counterclockwise) circulations can occur both southwest and southeast of the block(where low pressure is indicated on the diagram), and the weather near them can be stormy. Within the block, however, the weather is benign and warmer than normal.... A stationary high-amplitude ridge. Such a ridge often forms just off the West Coast of North America in winter. If it persists, it steers Pacific storms far to the north and keeps the weather in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest anomalously dry and mild. 2, record 62, English, - blocking%20situation

Hydrolysis with Hydrogen Chloride Gas.... A variation of the use of concentrated hydrochloric acid combined with hydrogen chloride is the process of Hereng. Here, wood chips are impregnated with 30% hydrochloric acid in a mixer and then transferred by a conveyor into the reactor. Because the chips are not predried, the acid concentration in them is reduced to 20%. The reactor consists of a hexagonal upright vessel equipped with numerous inclined trays. The impregnated wood is moved from the top toward the bottom by means of a vibrator and thus the prehydrolysis is completed after 45 minutes. The acid, containing chiefly pentoses, is filtered off and part of it is returned to the mixer. In this way, the sugar concentration in the prehydrolyzate is increased to about 20% to 25%. In a second step, the material, which has again been mixed with 30% hydrochloric acid, is passed through the reactor and hydrogen chloride gas is injected at the bottom in a countercurrent. In this way, the acid concentration is increased to 40% to 41% or more. The hydrolyzed material is conveyed from the bottom of the reactor to a drying chamber and is dried there with anhydrous hydrogen chloride gas which has previously been passed through a calcium chloride solution. The hydrolyzed material, consisting of lignin and sugar, is extracted with water and the sugar solution is subjected to a posthydrolysis. 1, record 70, English, - Hereng%20process
