The Rockland Formation comprises the oldes strata of the Trenton Group in the Ottawa Embayment. It is 55 feet thick and consists of grey, argillaceous, finely crystalline limestone. The formation thins eastward to 19 feet near Montreal where it consists of dark grey, microcrystalline limestone termed the Ouareau Formation.

Cette formation est formée de 55 pieds de calcaire cristallin à grain fin de couleur grise et argileux. Elle s'amincit vers l'est et passe à 19 pieds près de Montréal, où elle est formée de calcaire microcristallin gris foncé que l'on appelle la formation d'Ouareau.

The graditionally overlying Billings Formation is represented by 170 feet of black bituminous shale that thickens eastward to 300 feet and forms the Lachine and Lotbinière Formations in northern Quebec Basin disconformably overlying the Trenton Group.
