Syphilitic infection leads to the production of nonspecific antibodies that react to cardiolipin. This reaction is the foundation of "non-treponemal" assays such as the VDRL(Venereal Disease Research Laboratory) test[, a] flocculation type [test that uses] an antigen-antibody interaction. The complexes remain suspended and therefore visible due to the lipid based antigens. With the VDRL a microscope is required... The VDRL assay detects an antibody against cardiolipin, a cellular membrane component that is released by cells when they are damaged by T. Tests sérologiques de la syphilis [...] 4, record 4, French, - test%20FTA%2DABS

Treponema-specific tests... are used primarily to confirm the diagnosis of syphilis in patients with a reactive non-treponemal test.... Unlike non-treponemal tests, which show a decline in titers or become nonreactive with effective treatment, most treponema-specific tests usually remain reactive for life. Because of the persistence of reactivity, possibly for the life of the patient, treponemal tests are of no value to the clinician in determining relapse, reinfection, or treatment efficacy. Therefore, a reactive treponemal test result only indicates exposure to T. [Treponema] pallidum at some time during a person's life. It does not indicate that the person currently has an active syphilis infection. For this reason, a positive treponemal test result should be confirmed with a non-treponemal test. 3, record 7, English, - treponemal%20test

Syphilis is a communicable disease caused by Treponema pallidum, which belongs to the Spirochaetaceae family. [In] primary syphilis, the primary lesion, called a chancre, is painless but slightly tender. It usually develops at the site of the infection an average of 3 weeks after exposure to T pallidum. Patients may ignore a visible lesion because it is painless unless it becomes secondarily infected. 1, record 10, English, - primary%20syphilis

The binding strength of antibodies to multivalent antigens, called avidity, is generally low in primary acute infections and increases in response to the maturation of the immune system. Measurement of avidity in serum dilutions is complicated and therefore, no avidity data are available in syphilis serology. By introduction of a solid phase elution method, avidity can be determined quickly using a sandwich ELISA for quantification of specific IgG antibodies with a lysate of treponema pallidum as antigen. 1, record 14, English, - avidity
