The Kainai(Blood) Tribe is a part of the Blackfoot Confederacy that includes the Piikani(Peigan) and the Siksika(Blackfoot), Sarcee and Gros Ventre. The Blackfoot Confederacy refer to themselves as Soyi-tapix, which means "the Prairie people.

With over 500 square miles of land, the Blood Tribe is one of the largest reserves in Canada. Made up of 26 separate entities, the Blood Tribe Chief and Council oversee land management decisions with input from their various departments.

KAINAI : literally means "Many Chiefs". The story is this; A Blackfoot entered a Kainai camp many years ago and asked for the chief. All present replied with "I am". The Blackfoot then replied; "I will call you the tribe of many chiefs. "

BLOOD : Supposedly the reason the Kainai tribe were called Blood came from as far back as the first traders. These traders named the People "Blood" because of the red ocre they used on their faces and on their ceremonial objects.

Contact Period in the Champlain Valley(1609-1664 AD)... 1609 the Mahican living in the Hudson Valley came in contact with Dutch explorer Henry Hudson. Shortly thereafter, the Dutch began to trade metal tools to the Mahican in exchange for furs. The Mahican also developed alliances with the French. When the English captured New Amsterdam in 1664, a region which included much of the Mahican's traditional territory, the Mahican were forced to develop alliances with the British. By 1700 the Mahican population had been decreased from an estimated 4, 000 to about 500 through European diseases, famine, wars, and political pressures. Many of the Mahican merged with other groups, including the Dutch, the Western Abenaki, the French, and the Mohawk Iroquois. By 1720 the Mahican no longer existed as an organized native tribe in the Champlain and Hudson Valleys. The influx of Europeans to the Northeast caused great upheaval among the region's Native American populations. Disease, confusing political and economic relations, and continuous warfare split native communities apart and forced them to join outlying groups....

Lévy-Bruhl proposed two major characteristics of primitive thought. First of all, such thought partakes of the law of participation. Primitive individuals see objects, beings, and other external phenomena as at once identical with themselves and also as something other than themselves. Thus, the Trumai(a tribe in north Brazil) say that they are aquatic animals, meaning not that they are only fish, but rather that they are both human beings and fish, but rather that they are both human beings and fish at the same time. Second, and in a fashion no less incomprehensible to the Western mind, primitive individuals can emit and receive mystical forces, properties, and qualities, which are felt as outside themselves, without their ceasing to be what they are. Thus, a newborn child can suffer the consequences of everything his father does, eats, says, and the like(Cazeneuve 1972). Given these properties, the primitive mind does not abstain from contradiction. There is no need to give up an idea because it collides with another one : both notions can be entertained simultaneously.

The territory of the Western Shoshoni included central and western Idaho, northwestern Utah, central and northeastern Nevada, and Death Valley and Panamint Valley of California, largely barren and unproductive areas. They were sometimes referred to as "Diggers," from their habit of digging plant roots with a stick as an important means of subsistence. Another name applied was Shoshoko, meaning "walkers", to distinguish them from the horse-owning Shoshoni.

Digger : Said by Powell to be the English translation of Nuanuints, the name of a small tribe near St George, s. w. Utah,. It was the only Paiute tribe practising agriculture, hence the original signification of the name, "digger". In time the name was applied to every tribe known to use roots extensively for food and hence to be "diggers. "It thus included very many of the tribes of California, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, and Arizona, tribes speaking widely different languages and embracing perhaps a dozen distinct linguistic stocks. As the root-eaters were supposed to represent a low type of Indian, the term speedily became one of opprobrium [pejorative].
