TRICKLE IRRIGATION SYSTEM [6 records]

Record 1 2005-05-17

English

Subject field(s)
  • Drainage and Irrigation (Agric.)
  • Irrigation (Civil Engineering)
CONT

Automatic drip irrigation systems can include AC or DC controllers, AC or DC valves, drip tubing, drip fittings, drippers, and microsprinklers. The AC or DC valves (also called stations or zones) control the flow of water to the landscape area. Each valve open and shuts their zone upon a signal from the controller.

CONT

Consider installing an automatic trickle irrigation system if you plan to be away for extended periods.

"High tunnels can be used ... for gourmet or specialty crops, or for organic farming. You even can put small fruit trees such as figs inside the structures." Explained simply, high tunnels are single-car garage-size structures covered with clear plastic sheeting to manipulate soil and air temperatures using the energy of the sun. ... a series of growth trials [will be conducted] in 24 research high tunnels, which are 36 feet long, 17 feet wide and 9 feet high. ... Commercial-size versions of high tunnels, which are 96 feet long, also protect plants from insects, diseases and wind damage, virtually eliminating field loss ...

CONT

High tunnels are not conventional greenhouses. But like plastic-covered greenhouses, they are generally quonset-shaped, constructed of metal bows that are attached to metal posts which have been driven into the ground about two feet deep. They are covered with one layer of 6-mil greenhouse-grade polyethylene, and are ventilated by manually rolling up the sides each morning and rolling them down in early evening. There is no permanent heating system although it is advisable to have a standby portable propane unit to protect against unexpected below-freezing temperatures. There are no electrical connections. The only external connection is a water supply for trickle irrigation. The ends of the tunnels are framed in, and may be made portable(removable) to facilitate easy access into the tunnel with a small tractor and tiller.

CONT

Tunnel greenhouses. Tunnel with a great range of models depending on the widths, heights and distances between arches.

CONT

DEF

[A] system(drip, trickle, [or] micro sprinklers) [that] provides water in small volumes and generally provides water to plants with less waste than furrow irrigation.

CONT

A micro irrigation system delivers water to the crop using a network of mainlines, sub-mains and lateral lines with emission points spaced along their lengths.

CONT

Drip and trickle systems apply water through small holes in small diameter tubes placed on or below the surface of the field. Another type of system, micro sprinklers, supplies water from low-volume sprinkler heads located above the surface. Low flow systems are expensive and their use is generally limited to high-value crops such as vegetables, fruits, and vineyards.

CONT

DEF

Micro irrigation system (low pressure and low volume) wherein water is applied to the soil surface as drops or small streams through emitters.

OBS

Preferred term is drip irrigation [system].

OBS

drip irrigation system; trickle irrigation system. micro irrigation system : do not confuse with the generic concept. See next observation.

OBS

Actually, drip irrigation--where water seeps from tubing or drip emitters--[and its synonym, trickle irrigation]) is only one type of micro-irrigation system. Other forms include bubblers, micro-sprinklers(which rotate) and micro-sprayers(which are stationary).

DEF

CONT

Trickle irrigation laterals can be divided into two categories : line source emitters and point source emitters. Line source emitters are used when plants are closely spaced within a row, with rows several feet apart as with most vegetable crops.... Point source emitters are used when widely spaced point sources of water are needed, as in the case of large containers or orchard crops where the trees are spaced several feet apart in each direction. This type of system utilizes one(or more) emitting device attached to a pipeline at or near the base of the plant, irrigating a single container or a bulb of soil surrounding the root mass of one plant.

CONT

Emitters also come factory-installed in polyethylene tubing; these are often referred to as "in-line" emitters or emitter lines. Spaced 12, 18, 24, or 36 inches apart, they deliver 1/2, 1, or 2 gph and are available in non-pressure-compensating and pressure-compensating versions. Some emitter lines are infused with a small amount of herbicide to prevent root intrusion; these can be buried and used to water lawns.

CONT

Sometimes called "trickle irrigation", a drip irrigation system delivers water slowly to growing plants and limits the delivered water to the immediate vicinity of the roots.... Drip systems consist of emitters, lateral lines, main lines, and a control station. Emitters control the flow of water from the lateral line to the soil at the base of a plant, generally at a rate of from 1 to 4 gallons(3. 8 to 15. 1 liters) per hour.
