Retractable landing gear may be retracted manually, electrically, or hydraulically. The main struts of retractable landing gear are mounted on trunnions and bearings so that they can easily be swung upward into the fuselage or wing. The retracting mechanism may be a jackscrew arrangement, an electric-motor-operated screw or gear system, or a hydraulic actuating cylinder connected to suitable linking devices.

Landing gear may be classified as either fixed or retractable, and it may also be classified according to arrangement on the aircraft. In this case we may say that the two principal arrangements are conventional and tricycle.

In aviation, the undercarriage or landing gear is the structure(usually wheels) that supports an aircraft on the ground and allows it to taxi.... Wheeled undercarriages come in two types : conventional or "taildragger" undercarriage, where there are two main wheels towards the front of the aircraft and a single, much smaller, wheel or skid at the rear; or tricycle undercarriage where there are two main wheels(or wheel assemblies) under the wings and a third smaller wheel in the nose. Most modern aircraft have tricycle undercarriages.

Sur le B 747, les atterrisseurs principaux sont au nombre de 4. Deux atterrisseurs, principaux, d'aile et deux atterrisseurs, principaux de fuselage. [...] L'extrémité de chaque jambe de train possède deux essieux. Sur chacune de leurs extrémités sont fixées deux fusées. Quatre roues sont montées sur celles-ci. L'avantage d'un tel dispositif est de diminuer l'emcombrement des roues tout en gardant la même surface de contact avec le sol. En outre, la répartition des charges autour de la monojambe est meilleure. Enfin la surface de freinage est accrue. L'inconvénient est le problème de logement du train. Il se fait dans l'emplanture de l'aile ou dans le fuselage ou dans un fuseau prévu à cet effet dans la partie arrière de l'aile.

The landing gear of the BE-10 aircraft is a fully retractable tricycle configuration, driven by a 28-volt motor located on the forward side of the main spar. The main gear actuators are driven from the motor gearbox through torque shafts. The nose-gear actuator is driven by a duplex chain from a sprocket on the motor gearbox. The input shaft to the nose-gear actuator drives a series of rotating gears inside the actuator. These gears rotate a screw into and out of a lubricated aluminum-bronze alloy nut. The movement of the screw through the lubricated nut extends and retracts the nose landing gear.
