TRIM DRAG [3 records]

Record 1 2017-11-01

Subject field(s)
  • Aeroindustry
CONT

In the case of combat aircraft, designed-in lack of stability can offer faster turn rates, tighter turn radii and reductions in fuel consumption during manoeuvring flight, plus the ability to fly in unconventional attitudes(such as extreme angles of attack) or perform unconventional manoeuvres. The reduction in the energy required to perform manoeuvres comes largely from the decrease in trim drag involved in initiating the manoeuvre : the movement of flight control surfaces required to alter the aircraft's attitude is much less than is needed with a positively stable aircraft, and the actual control surfaces themselves can be made smaller.

CONT

OBS

The term ["muscle car"] generally describes a rear wheel drive mid-size car with a large, powerful V8 engine and special trim, intended for maximum torque on the street or in drag racing competition. It is distinguished from sports cars, which were customarily and coincidentally considered smaller, two-seat cars, or GTs [grand tourers], two-seat or 2+2 cars intended for high-speed touring and possibly road racing. High-performance full-size or compact cars are arguably excluded from this category, as are the breed of compact sports coupes inspired by the Ford Mustang, the "pony car". Another factor used in defining classic muscle cars are their age and country of origin. A classic muscle car is usually but not necessarily made in the US or Australia between 1964 and 1975.

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Propulsion Systems
CONT

The development of jet and rocket propulsion in the 1940s overcame the "speed cubed" law of power required and enabled transonic airflows with attendant drag rise, trim changes and buffet to be encountered at level flight speeds; previously they had been experienced only in steep dives by propeller-driven aeroplanes.

CONT
