Subject field(s)
  • Diagnostic Procedures (Medicine)
  • Microbiology and Parasitology
  • Bacterial Diseases
DEF

A method for the differential staining of bacteria by treatment with a watery solution of iodine and the iodide of potassium after staining with a triphenylmethane dye(as crystal violet).

CONT

The Gram staining method ... is one of the most important staining techniques in microbiology. It is almost always the first test performed for the identification of bacteria ... The microorganisms that retain the crystal violet-iodine complex appear purple brown under microscopic examination [and] are commonly classified as gram positive ... Others that are not stained by crystal violet are referred to as gram negative.

Domaine(s)
  • Méthodes diagnostiques (Médecine)
  • Microbiologie et parasitologie
  • Maladies bactériennes
DEF

OBS

Colorante de Gram: yodo, 1 g; yoduro potásico, 2 g; agua, 300 ml.

DEF

A group of colorless derivatives of triphenylmethane produced by the reduction of dyes which, on oxidation, are reconverted into the dye.

OBS

leuco bases: Colourless compounds formed by reduction of triphenylmethane dyes. Generally, they are amino or hydroxy derivatives of triphenylmethane. Use of this class name, which is more or less parochial to the technology of dyes, is not endorsed. E.g. (p-Me2NC6H4)2CHPh, the leuco base of Malachite Green. [The prefix "p-" in the chemical formula must be italicized.]

French

Domaine(s)
  • Chimie
  • Teintures et pigments (Industries)
DEF
