To maintain a stable perception of the world around us while we engage in normal movements throughout our day, such as walking, we have something known as the vestibulo-ocular reflex(VOR). This reflex keeps us steady and balanced even though our eyes and head are continuously moving when we perform most actions. When we make a head movement, our eye muscles are triggered instantly to create an eye movement opposite to that of our head movement at the exact same speed to readjust the visual world, which, in turn, stabilizes our retinal image by keeping the eye still in space and focused on an object, despite the head motion. 8, record 2, English, - vestibulo%2Docular%20reflex

The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off. 13, record 19, English, - directional%20gyroscope

Record number: 19, Textual support number: 2 CONT

The idea behind seed pelleting is to take a seed that is comparatively light in density and oddly shaped and turn it into a seed with a pellet around it that makes that seed heavier, more uniform, and as perfectly round as possible. Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. If the signal fades, it's the wrong way, so turn around(180 degrees) and march in the other direction until you hear the strongest signal(remember to keep turning down the volume). The model represents the steel-plate type wagon turntable, 15ft.(4, 6m.) diameter. These were found in goods yards and industrial sites where space restrictions were such that conventional pointwork could not be accommodated. Their lightweight construction meant that locomotives were prohibited from traversing them. Consequently, they were often used in locations where shunting was performed by tractors, horses or where capstan haulage of wagons was employed. The table was turned by one of two methods : a bar inserted into a socket provided a means whereby the turntable could be rotated manually, or a powered capstan was employed to turn the wagon by means of a rope attached to one of a series of bollards around the rim of the turntable plate. 2, record 49, English, - wagon%20turntable

The swing-mast truck... is another side-loading variation of the counterbalance truck. The swing-mast truck is equipped with a rotating mast assembly instead of the rotating fork assembly used on turret trucks. This design limits these vehicles to only right-hand load rotation. Because the load can only be rotated to one side of the aisle, the swing mast truck must leave the aisle and turn around in order to store or retrieve loads from the opposite side of the aisle. These vehicles closely resemble the conventional counterbalance truck and can operate within narrow aisles of approximately 6-8 ft... 1, record 50, English, - swing%2Dmast%20truck

The original form of this expression was hear him, which was usually repeated. This imperative was used to call attention to a speaker's words, and naturally developed the sense of a broad expression of favor. This is how it is still used today, although one can always vary one's tone to express different sentiments; the Oxford English Dictionary noted around the turn of the century that hear, hear "is now the regular form of cheering in the House of Commons, and expresses, according to intonation, admiration, acquiescence, indignation, derision, etc. " 3, record 51, English, - Hear%2C%20hear%21

Student Activity : Place a globe of the Earth on a table near the centre of the room. Walk around the room so that you are always facing the globe. How must you turn in order that you always face the globe? How much must the International Space Station turn during each orbit around the Earth so that it always has the same face "looking" down at the Earth? Student Challenge : Looking down on the Earth's North Pole, the International Space Station orbits the Earth in a counter-clockwise direction(this is the same direction as the Earth turns on its axis). Sketch the Earth(looking down on the North Pole) and add the orbit of the International Space Station. Show the ISS at three or four points during the orbit. Assuming the Sun is to the left of your diagram, what happens to the solar panels as the ISS travels around the Earth? MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...) 1, record 56, English, - God%20gun

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. In areas where debonding occurred, new concrete is placed over the repaired or damaged area, giving rise to non-uniform chloride concentration around the steel; this in turn leads to the formation of concentration cells. In this situation the steel in the salt-free zone will be the non-corroding cathode and the steel in the contaminated region, the anode. Thus the corrosion activity is shifting from place to place. 2, record 62, English, - concentration%20cells

1, record 77, French, - chargeur%20compact
