TURN BLAST [4 records]

Subject field(s)
  • Plant Diseases
  • Grain Growing
CONT

The rice blast disease is caused by the fungus Pyricularia grisea, which, in its sexual state, is known as Magnaporthe grisea. The disease can strike all aerial parts of the plant. Most infections occur on the leaves, causing diamond-shaped lesions with a gray or white center to appear, or on the panicles, which turn white and die before being filled with grain. P. grisea is highly specific to rice, although certain strains that don’t attack rice can harm weeds in the rice field. Once on a rice plant, the fungus rapidly produces thousands of spores, which are carried readily through the air, by wind or rain, onto neighboring plants.

CONT

Skate Tips : Catamaran. Talk about a blast from the past, catamaraning can be a lot of fun, and it's real easy to do. All you need is a partner. What you do is you sit on your board sideways facing your partner, while your partner does the same. Position the boards so that you can both put your feet comfortably on the ends of each other's boards. Once in position, you start down a fairly mellow hill. You turn by having the person on the turning side lean back, like he's on the trapeze of a catamaran. The person on the nonturning [side] leans in to help out with the turn.

OBS

I’m posting today to ask your opinion about whether David should participate in catamaran skateboarding. What is it, you ask? Well, let me explain. There are two skateboarders set parallel to each other a couple of feet apart. Each one is equipped with a toochas pad for comfort and two handles for steering. The riders sit on the boards with their bodies facing each other, their legs resting on the other person’s deck, and both looking in the direction of travel. Turning is accomplished by one person leaning back and pulling on their handles, at the same time the other person leans forward and pushes on theirs. There are no brakes.

CONT

floated gyroscope... Because of the requirement that the allowable rotation angle be small (on the order of an arc-second), an electrical torquer is used to maintain the float fixed relative to the case; it is the current to the torquer that is used as the measure of angular rotation of the gyro and hence of the vehicle to which it is attached.

CONT

Attitude gyros, technically called vertical gyros because of the orientation of their spin axis, do precess, but correction is applied automatically. All attitude gyros have an automatic erection system that drives the gyro back to vertical when it precesses. The erection system detects gravity by means of a pendulous sensor that in turn opens air blast vanes on an air-driven gyro or powers electric torquer motors to drive the gyro back to vertical when it precesses.
