The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off.

Le conservateur de cap, ou gyroscope directionnel, est l'un des trois instruments à gyroscope. Aligné avec le compas, il donne une indication précise et stable concernant le cap magnétique de l'appareil. Le conservateur de cap constitue une aide importante car le compas est sujet à des erreurs causées par l'accélération, la décélération et la courbure du champ magnétique terrestre, particulièrement sous les hautes latitudes. Il arrive fréquemment que le compas oscille; il est particulièrement difficile à lire dans les turbulences ou pendant les manœuvres. Fonctionnement. Le gyroscope du conservateur de cap pivote dans un plan vertical. Une carte comportant des caps maintient son orientation lorsque l'avion tourne. Le mouvement apparent de la carte donne au pilote une indication précise et instantanée du cap de l'avion et de la direction dans laquelle il tourne. La carte est marquée de 5 degrés en 5 degrés, avec une indication chiffrée tous les 30 degrés et les points cardinaux repérés par N, S, E, O.

En glissade le palonnier est mis en sens contraire. La bille part du côté du virage, le vent ne vient plus de face mais de côté car l'avion glisse en crabe vers l'inclinaison.

The inclinometer in both the turn and slip indicator [older aircraft] and the turn coordinator [modern aircraft] measures the turn quality.... when in a turn, part of the lift of the wing goes into "turning" the aircraft, this is called the horizontal component of lift(HCL). This HCL is directed toward the center of the turn. Also, a force directed outward and away from the center of the turn exists. This is called centrifugal force(CF). For the turn to be coordinated these two opposing forces must be equal. When they are equal, the ball in the inclinometer will remain in the middle.

The attitude indicator shows rotation about both the longitudinal axis to indicate the degree of bank, and about the lateral axis to indicate pitch(nose up, level or nose down)... Principal Attitude Indicator Errors. Turn Error. During a normal coordinated turn, centrifugal force causes the gyro to precess toward the inside of the turn. This precession increases as the bank steepens; therefore, it is greatest during the actual turn. The error disappears as the aircraft rolls out at the end of a 180 degrees turn at a normal rollout rate. Therefore, when performing a steep turn, the pilot may use the attitude indicator for rolling in and out of the turn, but should use other instruments(VSI and altimeter) during the turn for specific pitch information.
