TURN INTO WIND [7 records]

Record 1 2013-08-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Rotary Machines - Types
  • Wind Energy
DEF

[A] wind turbine [whose] rotor revolutions are [kept] even by adjusting the blade angle.

OBS

In the case of a system with blade-angle adjustment, the electronic controller constantly measures the system's power output. If this is too high, a command is sent to the blade-adjusting system with the result that the rotor blades are moved slightly out of the wind. When the wind drops, the blades are turned into the wind. It must therefore be possible to turn the rotor blades around their own longitudinal axis.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Machines tournantes électriques - types
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Record 2 2011-05-25

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wind Energy
DEF

A wind turbine that makes water from ambient air.

OBS

The wind turbine blade powers the generator, which in turn powers a cooling compressor that converts gaseous water in atmospheric air into liquid water using a heat exchanger and a humidity condenser.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Énergie éolienne
DEF

Record 3 2006-12-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric, Climatic and Meteorological Phenomena
CONT

Before heading out to the backcountry, it's important to monitor the weather for several days beforehand. In just minutes slight fluctuations in weather can turn an otherwise safe slope into avalanche-prone territory. Always be aware of precipitation, the wind and how the sun hits the slopes. For example, a sudden storm with rain can almost instantly destabilize a slope's snow cover.

CONT

The sun destabilizes the snowpack. [Example approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.]

OBS

destabilize; weaken: terms officially approved by the Avalanche Bulletin Terminology Standardization Committee.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Phénomènes météorologiques, climatiques et atmosphériques
CONT

  • Wind Energy
DEF

[A windmill whose] body... is balanced on a large post and trestle [and] revolves to turn the blades into the wind.

OBS

This is the earliest type of European windmill.

French

DEF

OBS

Subject field(s)
  • Telecommunications Facilities
CONT

The primary ground station will send the processed data to users via the satellite at a high and a low rate. High Rate Information Transmission(HRIT) will contain the full volume of processed, compressed image data and Low Rate Information Transmission(LRIT) will contain a reduced set at lower resolution. In addition, the Eumetsat Control and Processing Centre, with support from other satellite applications facilities throughout Europe, will extract information from the processed data and turn it into ’products’ of particular use to meteorologists and climatologists, such as wind field diagrams, maps of upper tropospheric humidity and analyses of cloud shape and height.
