Cords or webbing of silk, nylon, cotton, rayon, or other textile materials which connect the drap surface of the parachute [and paraglider] to the harness.

A paraglider is made up of the wing, rigging(lines), small carabiner, and risers.... Lines. Commonly known as lines(a set of rigging) measuring variously between 0. 4-1. 7 mm, even 2. 2 mm, their high level of strength or weight resistance depends on their thickness and the properties of material used in its construction. They are usually concerned with a protective sheath to guard against ground friction and are made from dyneema, kevlar, spectra, superaramid and so on. The lines attach the wing to risers which in turn are attached to the pilots harness, and extend from the wings downward side in the order specified by the particular manufacturer, gradually tapering off in thickness and number via a series of quick links. Finally they end up in tiny linkages(known as small carabiner) from the risers.

A metal spike having screw threads on one end and an eye on the other used to secure an ice climber.

Ice screws... Push the ice screw into the ice while twisting the hanger by hand in a clockwise direction to get it started. Placing the ice screw at waist level allows you to push harder and turn the screw with less effort. Continue to turn the ice screw handle by hand until the hanger nearly contacts the ice surface. Chip away any fractured ice using your ice axe, then turn the ice screw handle the remainder of the way. Align the hanger so that it hangs downward—in the direction of pull.... When possible, choose an ice screw length that will not bottom out on rock underneath the ice. Turning your ice screw into rock will damage the teeth and can fracture the ice.

The tubular, hollow-core ice screw ... minimizes fracturing of the ice because the displaced ice moves up into the core of the screw ... it has four cutting teeth and a conical interior. The tip of the cone is the toothed end of the screw. As ice enters the cone it can expand. The core fills with ice chips that are easy to clean out by tapping the screw against a hammer of axe head.

The heading indicator(HI) uses the principle of rigidity in space for it's operation. The gyro is mounted such that it registers changes around the vertical axis only; i. e. direction changes. The compass card attached to the gyro appears to the pilot as though it is turning. In reality, it and the attached gyro are remaining rigid in space, while the aircraft and case turn about the gyro. The HI is not automatically synchronized with the magnetic compass. It must be set to the compass heading while level on the airport surface prior to take-off.

Le conservateur de cap, également appelé directionnel, est un gyroscope libre dont l'axe est orienté horizontalement selon la direction qui lui a été assignée lors de sa mise en rotation. Cette orientation sera prise pour référence horizontale. En choisissant le nord magnétique comme référence, cet appareil indiquera le cap magnétique de l'avion. Il faudra le «caler» avant chaque vol lorsque l'avion est aligné sur la piste (piste dont on connaît l'orientation).

Le conservateur de cap, ou gyroscope directionnel, est l'un des trois instruments à gyroscope. Aligné avec le compas, il donne une indication précise et stable concernant le cap magnétique de l'appareil. Le conservateur de cap constitue une aide importante car le compas est sujet à des erreurs causées par l'accélération, la décélération et la courbure du champ magnétique terrestre, particulièrement sous les hautes latitudes. Il arrive fréquemment que le compas oscille; il est particulièrement difficile à lire dans les turbulences ou pendant les manœuvres. Fonctionnement. Le gyroscope du conservateur de cap pivote dans un plan vertical. Une carte comportant des caps maintient son orientation lorsque l'avion tourne. Le mouvement apparent de la carte donne au pilote une indication précise et instantanée du cap de l'avion et de la direction dans laquelle il tourne. La carte est marquée de 5 degrés en 5 degrés, avec une indication chiffrée tous les 30 degrés et les points cardinaux repérés par N, S, E, O.

A turn in which the inclinometer is centered.

The turn and slip indicator... The instrument is usually calibrated to indicate a rate one turn when the turn needle is centred on one of the indexes seen either side of the centre index. In a straight and level flight, the ball and needle are both centred. In a correctly banked turn, the needle indicates the rate of the turn. The forces acting on the ball cause it to remain centred.

En glissade le palonnier est mis en sens contraire. La bille part du côté du virage, le vent ne vient plus de face mais de côté car l'avion glisse en crabe vers l'inclinaison.

A reactor core isolation cooling system includes a reactor pressure vessel containing a reactor core, a drywell vessel, a containment vessel, and an isolation pool containing an isolation condenser. A turbine is operatively joined to the pressure vessel outlet steamline and powers a pump operatively joined to the pressure vessel feedwater line. In operation, steam from the pressure vessel powers the turbine which in turn powers the pump to pump makeup water from a pool to the feedwater line into the pressure vessel for maintaining water level over the reactor core.

The attitude indicator shows rotation about both the longitudinal axis to indicate the degree of bank, and about the lateral axis to indicate pitch(nose up, level or nose down)... The principal parts of interest to the pilot are : The miniature wings attached to the case remain parallel to the wings of the aircraft. The horizon bar which separates the top(light) and bottom(dark) halves to the ball. The degree marks on the upper periphery of the dial. The first 3 on both sides of center are 10 degrees apart, then 60 degree bank marks, and 90 degree bank marks. Fifteen degrees of bank is called a standard rate turn.

On détermine le long de la trajectoire initiale de l'aéronef de recherches qui pénètre dans la zone deux positions pour lesquelles l'indication est la même, ainsi que le milieu du segment qui les joint. (Ce point coïncidera avec le point d'intensité maximale du signal, si celui-ci pouvait être déterminé de façon précise.) Le pilote fait alors demi-tour et lorsqu'il atteint le milieu du segment, il vire à angle droit vers la gauche ou la droite. Si le signal s'évanouit, cela signifie de toute évidence que le pilote se dirige dans la mauvaise direction; il fait alors demi-tour. Deux autres points de même intensité de signal sont alors déterminés sur cette nouvelle trajectoire. (Cette fois-ci le point pour lequel l'intensité relevée est maximale, s'il est déterminé de manière précise, est également l'emplacement du radiophare.) Après avoir passé le deuxième point (de même intensité de signal), le pilote fait demi-tour et descend à l'altitude appropriée. Il s'est révélé que cette méthode de recherches, si elle est appliquée avec soin, est très précise et peut éviter toutes recherches ultérieures.

In a skidding turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. After return on the aircraft to straight and level flight, the instrument shows a turn in the direction of the skid. In a normal turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. The precession error is quickly corrected by the erecting mechanism.

The only really tricky part of the attitude indicator is its erecting mechanism. When power (vacuum) is first applied to the instrument, the mechanism quickly erects the gyro spindle to plumb-vertical in order to align the artificial horizon with the natural horizon. In flight, the erecting mechanism continually compensates the gyro for precession errors in order to keep it aligned throughout the course of a long flight. The design of the erecting mechanism is quite clever. In an air-driven attitude gyro, there are "pendulous vanes" suspended from pivots attached to the lower portion of the sealed gyro housing, one vane for each exhaust port. The vanes are positioned so that, when the gyro is erect, each vane half-covers its associated exhaust port. If the gyro tilts so that its axle is not plumb, the pendulous vanes shift so that one exhaust port is more-than-half-covered and the opposite exhaust port is less-than-half-covered. The resulting imbalance of discharge air exerts a force on the rotor housing at right angles to the direction of tilt, causing the gyro to precess to the erect position. As soon as the gyro is erect, the pendulous vanes return to a balanced condition to remove the precessing force. Pure magic! The erecting mechanism can erect the gyro quite quickly at initial power-up because the gyro doesn’t exhibit much gyroscopic rigidity at low rotor RPMs. Typically, the horizon bar becomes level within the first 10 or 15 seconds, and then its oscillations (caused by precessional nutation of the gyro) are damped out within a minute or so as the rotor comes up-to-speed.

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. Make sure that the rope leaving the vertical spar is close to the same level on both sides to prevent the spar from tipping over.

On a call for heat the controller starts a sequence of events that ensure safe operation before the burner is allowed to start. The controller continues to monitor burner operation while the boiler is running. If for any reason the controller senses an unsafe operating condition it will shut the burner off. Air release chambers are installed ahead of any metering equipment to ensure accurate measurement of fuel flow. They may be installed in either the pumphouse or on the dispensing platform. They operate on the reduced flow velocity principle which separates and eliminates air from the fuel. As the fuel enters the air release chamber(the diameter of which is much greater than the diameter of the inlet to the air release body), the velocity of the flow is greatly reduced allowing an interval of time for the air to separate from the fuel. The air, being lighter than the liquid, rises to the top of the chamber, where it remains until a sufficient quantity has accumulated to lower the liquid level, causing the float to drop, which in turn opens the vent valve and allows the accumulated air to escape. In most cases the line from the air vent is returned to the storage or scavenger tank to prevent spraying fuel into the surrounding area in case of a malfunction of the air release chamber.
