The number of degrees per second a particular aircraft can turn.

CONT

The turn indicator indicates the rate of the turn, not the amount of the turn. Thus, a standard rate, or rate one, turn will give a rate of turn of 3 degrees per second, or 360 degrees in two minutes. The instrument is usually calibrated to indicate a rate one turn when the turn needle is centred on one of the indexes seen either sides of the centre index.

Trimming Technique. Set thrust symmetrically with autopilot in altitude hold and speed stabilized. Disconnect autopilot and observe response. If aircraft does not hold altitude, trim the stabilizer to correct the mistrim. Manually fly the aircraft and hold wings level. Center the sideslip indicator ("ball") using rudder trim. Trim the ailerons hands off as required to maintain wings level.

The inclinometer in both the turn and slip indicator [older aircraft] and the turn coordinator [modern aircraft] measures the turn quality.... when in a turn, part of the lift of the wing goes into "turning" the aircraft, this is called the horizontal component of lift(HCL). This HCL is directed toward the center of the turn. Also, a force directed outward and away from the center of the turn exists. This is called centrifugal force(CF). For the turn to be coordinated these two opposing forces must be equal. When they are equal, the ball in the inclinometer will remain in the middle.

The second scourge of the weather is hail. This has, it is true, a more localised effect but the havoc that it brings is considerable in the small area that it sweeps. The grapes which have been split by hailstones lose their juice which in turn causes rot to set in, which lowers the quality of the already greatly reduced harvest. Certain vineyard areas have installed anti-hail guns but it must be admitted that their success is far from complete.

Frost is a risk well known to local orchardists, but the sudden hail storms which occur regularly between September and January constitute a particularly selective threat to the young fruit crop. ... alternative means were sought to combat hail. One such device was the ’hail gun’, originating in France and first introduced into an Ardmona orchard in time for the 1986-7 season. Certainly not a recent invention and lacking scientific support for its efficacy, the hail gun has gained a strong following among orchardists. Costing about $30,000 each, hail guns are electronically operated and powered by exploding acetylene; the benefits were demonstrated, to the satisfaction of some, during a damaging storm in 1987. Their precise mode of action remains uncertain.

A coin is graded into one of two general categories : circulated or uncirculated. Within each are a number of grades which further define its condition which in turn determines its price. A circulated coin is primarily judged on the basis of the degree of wear of the coin, the less the better. An uncirculated coin has no wear at all and is judged according to at least three factors :(1) qualities of the lustre,(2) surfaces, and(3) strike. Connoisseurs add a fourth :(4) quality of the original toning.

Les pièces de monnaie sont regroupées en deux catégories : pièces de circulation et pièces hors-circulation ou de collection. L'état de conservation des pièces dépend de très nombreux facteurs théoriquement indépendants de l'âge de la pièce : mode de fabrication, nature et qualité de l'outillage, durée et forme de circulation et conditions de conservation. Facteur déterminant pour le collectionneur, le degré de conservation doit être rigoureusement établi. En principe, c'est toujours la plus mauvaise face qui doit être retenue pour qualifier la pièce. Les frappes anciennes étant souvent irrégulières, la pièce est jugée sur son état; on précise, le cas échéant, qu'une lettre ou qu'un détail est «mal venu».

Scientists began to apply formalisms of chaos to research in artificial intelligence. The dynamics of systems wandering between basins of attraction appealed to those looking for a way to model symbols and memories. A physicist thinking of "ideas" as regions with fuzzy boundaries, separate yet overlapping, pulling like magnets and yet letting go, would naturally turn to the image of a phase-space with basins of attraction. Such models seem to have the right features : points of stability mixed with instability, and regions with changeable boundaries. Their fractal structure offers the kind of infinitely self-referential quality that seems so central to the mind's ability to bloom with ideas, decisions, emotions, and all other artifacts of consciousness.
