CONT

Turnbuckles are used for adjusting tension in ropes, cables, tie rods and other tensioning systems, as well as for pulling together and pushing apart anchor points. Heavy duty rigging turnbuckles consist of two threaded bolts, each screwed into the ends of a metal frame. One side is left-hand threaded and the other is right-hand threaded, so riggers can turn the metal frame to push apart and pull together the threaded bolts. These threaded bolts come with a wide variety of end fittings and attachments including jaws, eyes, clevises, hooks and many more. All cable turnbuckles and turnbuckle hardware feature UNC [unified coarse] threads...

CONT

The range of manoeuvre is very wide. Perhaps the most basic is the "kick turn". This enables a rider to do a 90 degree turn on the spot. It can be done on either a stationary or a moving board. The back foot should be right at the tail of the board with the front foot about half way along. The weight of the body is transferred entirely to the rear foot and as the board rises the body is turned through 90 degrees in the desired direction.

An arrangement of wood that is standing end on and is built like a pyramid or cone. The centre is fired, and as the core burns away the outside logs fall inwards, constantly feeding the heart of the fire. This type of fire gives good radiation and even with wet wood burns well.

CONT

Every novice knows the wigwam fire--indeed if a child who has never made a fire were told to build one, he would surely turn up with a wigwam, for it is the natural arrangement. But nevertheless, it is not without importance in the craft, for it is the core of every fire lay no matter how elaborate. Viewed in its own right and aside from its contribution as the starting torch of other lays, it has few qualifications as a cooking fire if one intends to do more than stew a pot of tea, because its heat is all thrown to the center of the pyramid and offers no spread for the utensils, and its coals all drop to one small spot in the center. It is good for light, however, and is prized in the evening. First the coil of birch-bark, or the chip of fat pine, or the handful of tiny twigs broken into a pyramid, or the fuzz-stick; then a few softwood sticks from the size of a pencil up to that of your little finger, stacked around it in wigwam fashion, and lastly the hardwood sticks of finger and thumb size. Remember to keep it tall and slender. And keep it small--a foot high and a foot wide at the base.

CONT

Imperial Munitions Board, established November 1915 in Canada by the British Ministry of munitions, with Canadian government approval. Headed by J. W. Flavelle, a prominent Toronto businessman, the board was responsible for letting contracts on behalf of the British government for the construction of war materials in Canada. It began to establish "national factories, "which it owned outright, to produce munitions that private manufacturers were unable to turn out. Under IMB direction Canada produced a wide variety of war materiel including shells, ships, explosives and training planes. The IMB was dissolved in 1919.

CONT

For some the experience of riding up a hill will be one of elation but for most, the pain of climbing has been enough to see the bike sent to the darkest recesses of the shed or garage and the reintroduction of tiddly-winks to the daily activities.

CONT

You will get buckets of water thrown over you, you will get balloons from every corner thrown at you and they also have these huge bicycle pump looking things that throw a spout of water several meters. If you are cycling up a steep gradient you might be said to be a captive audience to them. They have no mercy.

CONT

You turn in the dirt road to your right and after a short slope you find a rocky climb, with fairly wide hairpin bends offering a beautiful view of the surrounding valleys. Just before the church of Cigno the tarmac road starts again and after cycling through this small village you get to a crossroads(the highest point this route) where you turn left along a beautiful slope leading to Civorio.

OBS

The term "gradient" may also be used to mean the "grade of a hill", in which case it is usually expressed as a percentage. "Hill" and "slope" are also polysemic.

The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator.

CONT
