A favourite manoeuvre in naval battle with fleets sailing in the normal battle disposition of line ahead. If a fleet in this disposition, either by a superiority of speed or by approaching at an angle, can cross ahead of the enemy's line approximately at right angles, it has a considerable tactical advantage in that all its guns can be fired on the broadside while the enemy can reply only with those guns which can fire ahead. It is also a tactical situation which forces an enemy to turn away, and in the resulting loss of speed during the turn and the difficulty of keeping guns bearing on an enemy while turning, the fleet "crossing the T" has a considerable gunnery advantage. 2, record 9, English, - crossing%20the%20T

Rigidity in space. The gyroscope resists turning. When it is "gimbaled" (free to move in a given direction) such that it is free to move either in 1, 2 or 3 dimensions, any surface such as an instrument dial attached to the gyro assembly will remain rigid in space even though the case of the gyro turns. The attitude indicator (AI) and the heading indicator (HI) use this property of rigidity in space for their operation. 6, record 11, English, - gyroscopic%20inertia

3, record 11, French, - inertie%20gyroscopique
Record number: 11, Textual support number: 1 CONT

3, record 15, French, - indicateur%20de%20virage%20et%20d%27inclinaison%20lat%C3%A9rale
Record number: 15, Textual support number: 1 OBS

Most pitch-changing mechanisms are operated by oil pressure(hydraulically) and use some type of piston-and-cylinder arrangement. The piston may move in the cylinder, or the cylinder may move over a stationary piston. The linear motion of the piston is converted by several different types of mechanical linkage into the rotary motion necessary to change the blade angle. The mechanical connection may be through gears, the pitch-changing mechanism turning a drive gear or power gear that meshes with a gear attached to the butt of each blade. 3, record 18, English, - pitch%2Dchange%20mechanism

1, record 18, French, - m%C3%A9canisme%20de%20changement%20de%20pas
