Adopted by the General Assembly on 11 December 2008, the Convention establishes a uniform and modern legal regime governing the rights and obligations of shippers, carriers and consignees under a contract for door-to-door carriage that includes an international sea leg.

Transport Canada keeps a watchful eye over ships transiting Canadian waters through NASP. It is the primary tool for detecting ship-source pollution in waters under Canadian jurisdiction. Evidence gathered by NASP crews is used by Transport Canada and Environment Canada to enforce the provisions of all Canadian legislation applicable to illegal discharges from ships, including the Canada Shipping Act and the Migratory Birds Convention Act.

The North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission(NEAFC) was established, in its current form, in 1980, by the Convention on Future Multilateral Cooperation in North-East Atlantic Fisheries. The first regional fisheries organization in the Northeast Atlantic, however, was the Permanent Commission established under the terms of the 1946 Convention for the Regulation of Meshes of Fishing Nets and the Size Limits of Fish. That Convention only allowed for a limited range of powers, however, and in 1959 a new Convention was concluded, establishing the North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission with wider powers than the Permanent Commission. NEAFC was effectively reborn in 1980, however, following the general extension of fishery limits to 200 miles and after seven EC member countries denounced the 1959 Convention and withdrew from the Commission.

The International Whaling Commission(IWC) was set up under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling which was signed in Washington DC on 2 December 1946. The purpose of the Convention is to provide for the proper conservation of whale stocks and thus make possible the orderly development of the whaling industry. The main duty of IWC is to keep under review and revise as necessary the measures laid down in the Schedule to the Convention which govern the conduct of whaling throughout the world. These measures, among other things, provide for the complete protection of certain species designate specified areas as whale sanctuaries; set limits on the numbers and size of whales which may be taken; prescribe open and closed seasons and areas for whaling; and prohibit the capture of suckling calves and female whales accompanied by calves. The compilation of catch reports and other statistical and biological records is also required.

[Normas, directrices y recomendaciones internacionales]: (a) en materia de inocuidad de los alimentos, las normas, directrices y recomendaciones establecidas por la Comisión del Codex Alimentarius sobre aditivos alimentarios, residuos de medicamentos veterinarios y plaguicidas, contaminantes, métodos de análisis y muestreo, y códigos y directrices sobre prácticas en materia de higiene; (b) en materia de sanidad animal y zoonosis, las normas, directrices y recomendaciones elaboradas bajo los auspicios de la Oficina Internacional de Epizootias; (c) en materia de preservación de los vegetales, las normas, directrices y recomendaciones internacionales elaboradas bajo los auspicios de la Secretaría de la Convención Internacional de Protección Fitosanitaria en colaboración con las organizaciones regionales que operan en el marco de dicha Convención Internacional; y (d) en lo que se refiere a cuestiones no abarcadas por las organizaciones mencionadas supra, las normas, recomendaciones y directrices apropiadas promulgadas por otras organizaciones internacionales competentes, en las que puedan participar todos los Miembros, identificadas por el Comité.

Ruse of War or Strategems. Art. 24 of the Hague Regulations respecting the Laws, and Custom of War on Land provides :"Ruses of War and the employment of methods necessary for obtaining information about the enemy and the country are considered lawful, "but Art. 44 says, "A belligerent is forbidden to force the population of occupied territory to give information about the army of the other belligerent, or about his means of defense. "Under Art. 23(f) it is forbidden "to make improper use of a flag of truce, of the national flag, or of military insignia and uniform of the enemy, as also the distinctive signs of the Geneva Convention. "However, there is some controversy as to what constitutes "improper use" of the enemy's flag or uniform. While stratagems are allowed, perfidy is prohibited.

Art. 1 of Convention(III) Relative to the Opening of Hostilities of the Hague Conference of 1907 provides that the hostilities between the contracting powers "must not commence without previous and explicit warning, in the form either of a reasoned declaration of war or of an ultimatum with conditional declaration of war". Moreover, under Art. 2, the existence of a state of war must be notified to neutral powers without delay, and would not take effect in regard to them until so notified, unless it were clearly shown that they were in fact aware of the existence of war. In the absence of such a declaration the legal effects of the war date from the commencement of hostilities if these are an expression of hostile intent. Although in that case the failure to make a declaration would constitute a breach of International Law.
