UNSTABLE AIRMASS [3 records]

Record 1 2004-12-06

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Air mass having static stability in its lower layers; it is free from convection, has a low degree of turbulence and may have stratiform clouds or fog or no clouds.

CONT

Vertical mixing is a function of atmospheric stability. A stable airmass is characterized by poor vertical mixing; an unstable airmass is characterized by good vertical mixing.

Key term(s)
  • stable air-mass

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 2 2004-10-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atmospheric Physics
DEF

Air mass having static instability in its lower layers ...

CONT

If the airmass is unstable, air which is pushed upward by some force will continue upward. An unstable airmass usually contains relatively warm(usually moist) air near the earth's surface and relatively cold(usually dry) air in the mid and upper levels of the atmosphere.

OBS

unstable air mass: ... convective clouds and precipitation occur if its moisture content is sufficiently high.

Key term(s)
  • unstable air-mass

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique de l'atmosphère
DEF

Record 3 2002-07-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • Astrophysics and Cosmography
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
CONT

To recover from the microburst, the crew apply maximum power and pitch up toward an angle that can attain 15 degrees. The inertial acceleration(acceleration in reference to the ground, as opposed to acceleration within the airmass) experienced by the pilots, combined with the unstable attitude of the aircraft may cause a dangerous illusion. The pilots may believe that the aircraft has reached a very high excess energy and thus, try to pitch down or reduce the engine power. In reality, the aircraft performance is still low as it penetrates the energy-reducing downdraft and tailwind components of the microburst.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astrophysique et cosmographie
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
CONT
