CONT

Nitrosyl perchlorate. This rather unstable compound should be kept away from moisture, heat, and other organic liquids with with it will ignite or decompose. This substance has the appearance of white crystals that pull moisture from the air. It will decompose on heating and will react with water forming harmful nitrogen oxide, NOx, compounds.... Nitrosyl perchlorate can be prepared by passing a mixture of nitric oxide gas and nitrogen dioxide gas into 72% perchloric acid in an Erlenmeyer flask.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

The splitting of atoms in the upper atmosphere through the bombardment of cosmic rays.

OBS

This results in the formation of new, often unstable, isotopes. Spallation reactions occur in the upper atmosphere when cosmic rays hit gas molecules and also at the surface of the earth by direct cosmic ray irradiation of atoms in solid geological materials.

Subject field(s)
  • Occupation Names (General)
  • Oil Drilling
CONT

Cementer(Oil and Gas Wells). Cements openings in walls or casings of oil or gas wells : studies rock formations and well conditions and determines method of cementing; calculates quality and quantity of cement required; supervises mixing of cement and pumping of it to predetermined sections of well; determines solidification time and tests completed job by emptying well and testing for seepage. May supervise workers locating faults in casing, mixing drilling fluids and regulating pressure to control unstable wells.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Désignations des emplois (Généralités)
  • Forage des puits de pétrole
CONT

CONT

Aggregate. In gas cleaning, a relatively stable assembly of dry particles, formed under the influence of physical forces.(The process of aggregate formation is known as aggregation). In other contexts, the particles need not be dry. The term is used in colloid chemistry to refer specifically to the structure that results from the cohesion of colloidal particles. Aggregate formation in colloidally unstable soils is termed either coagulation(formation of a coagulum) or flocculation(formation of a floc).

French

Domaine(s)
  • Dépoussiérage
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Pulp Preparation (papermaking)
DEF

Bleaching with a chlorine dioxide solution.

OBS

chlorine dioxide solution : A very unstable water solution of chlorine dioxide gas(ClO((subscript)) 2) produced in the chemical preparation area of a pulp mill. It is used in the pulp bleaching process.

OBS

The initial utilization of chlorine bleaching was in the later stages of a multi-stage bleaching sequence. The CEHDED sequence became dominant in the early 1960’s for the production of full-bleach kraft pulp. As the cost of Cl02 became more competitive with sodium hypochlorite in the late 1960’s, the CEDED sequence became the industry standard. In the 1970’s, attention was given to replacing part of the chlorine in the chlorination stage with chemically equivalent chlorine dioxide to improve pulp strength and color stability and reduce effluent color ....
