The physical breakdown of rocks by their expansion and contraction due to diurnal temperature changes is one of the most keenly debated topics in rock weathering research. Known as insolation weathering, it is the result of the physical inability of rocks to conduct heat well. This inability to conduct heat results in differential rates of expansion and contraction. Thus, the surface of the rock expands more than its interior, and this stress will eventually cause the rock to rupture. 5, record 3, English, - insolation%20weathering

Today wood piling is a mainstay of foundation systems. Thousands of pressure-treated wood pilings form the foundation of new construction projects at JFK Airport in New York and Dulles Airport in northern Virginia. The city of New Orleans is built on wood piles; because of the unstable ground on which the city rests, foundation piling is needed to reinforce its buildings and highways, including the massive Superdome. 1, record 4, English, - unstable%20ground

The IMP can detect mines buried in the ground to a maximum depth of 45 centimeters(18 inches), but it would take a highly trained operator to notice mines buried that deep. In its plastic tubular search head there are three coils. One transmits while the other two receive. Together these coils generate a magnetic induction bridge that is initially balanced for zero coupling. When the search head passes over a metallic object the induction bridge becomes unstable and produces an audible signal in the headset. 2, record 5, English, - IMP%20mine%20detector

The upslope cooling may form clouds concurrently with the fog. As is the case with advection fog, upslope fog can form with moderate to strong winds under cloudy skies. In stable air, upslope fog will form as soon as the air is cooled to the surface dew point. Temperature and dew point close at about 4°F for each 1, 000 feet rise in altitude. When air is unstable, convective clouds may form; fog forms at the surface where the ground level is at or above the condensation level. 3, record 7, English, - upslope%20fog

To recover from the microburst, the crew apply maximum power and pitch up toward an angle that can attain 15 degrees. The inertial acceleration(acceleration in reference to the ground, as opposed to acceleration within the airmass) experienced by the pilots, combined with the unstable attitude of the aircraft may cause a dangerous illusion. The pilots may believe that the aircraft has reached a very high excess energy and thus, try to pitch down or reduce the engine power. In reality, the aircraft performance is still low as it penetrates the energy-reducing downdraft and tailwind components of the microburst. 2, record 8, English, - inertial%20acceleration

"Dry boring" methods employ the use of a temporary casing to seal the pile bore through water-bearing or unstable strata overlying suitable stable material. Upon reaching the design depth a reinforcing cage is introduced, concrete is placed in the bore and bought up to the required level. The casing is then withdrawn. "Wet" boring also employs a temporary casing through unstable ground and is used when the pile bore cannot be sealed against water ingress. Boring is then undertaken using a digging bucket to drill through the underlying soils to design depth. The reinforcing cage is lowered into the bore and concrete is placed by tremmie pipe, following which extraction of the temporary casing takes place. 1, record 9, English, - temporary%20casing

[In] base metal mines(...) a large proportion of the ore reserves is found in pillars left between previously mined stopes. These pillars are usually mined using the undercut-and-fill method which is especially suited to unstable ground conditions. Starting at the top of the mining zone the ore is removed in horizontal slices and replaced by backfill to sustain the walls of the adjacent stopes. A wooden mat braced by posts is used to support the backfill so that the ore underneath can be removed.(...) In one mine, the conventional undercut-and-fill technique was modified by suspending the wooden mat on rock bolts anchored to the crown pillar, rather than supporting it on posts. 2, record 10, English, - undercut%20and%20fill%20mining
