DEF

A tank which is not completely filled or empty.

CONT

The free surface effect is a mechanism which can cause a watercraft to become unstable and capsize. It refers to the tendency of liquids... to move in response to changes in the attitude of a craft's cargo holds, decks, or liquid tanks in reaction to operator-induced motions... When referring to the free surface effect, the condition of a tank that is not full is described as a "slack tank"...

DEF

A yellow pungent volatile oil (trade name Agene) formerly used for bleaching and aging flour.

CONT

The chemical compound nitrogen trichloride(trichloramine) is a chloramine, with chemical formula NCl3. A yellow, oily, pungent-smelling liquid, it is often found as a byproduct of chemical reactions between many nitrogen-containing compounds and chlorine. Nitrogen trichloride was trademarked as Agene and used to artificially bleach and age flour. When purified, it is highly unstable.

CONT

Methionine sulfoximine (MSO) is a rare amino acid. It occurs in nature or as a by-product of some forms of food processing. A notable example of the latter was a former method for bleaching wheat flour, using nitrogen trichloride, the "agene process," in use for most of the first 50 years of this century. "Agenized" flour was found to be responsible for various neurological disorders in animals, and MSO was identified as the toxic factor.

DEF

The transformation of unstable sodium sulfide(Na2S) to the more stable sodium thiosulfate(Na2S2O3) in black liquor by the use of air or oxygen(O2) so that objectionable hydrogen sulfide(H2S) and organic sulfur compound formation in its evaporation and combustion are minimized, thus preventing their loss from the sulfate recovery process. The treated liquid is called oxidized black liquor.

DEF

A state of pseudo-equilibrium in which a system, such as a supersaturated vapour or supercooled liquid, has acquired more energy than that normally required for its most stable state, and yet is not unstable.

OBS

[This condition] is often achieved by attaining the state very slowly. A slight disturbance, such as the addition of a small amount of the stable phase will produce the stable state.

OBS

The term "metastable state" has different meanings in physics and in electronics.
