Atomic-force microscopy is similar to scanning-tunneling microscopy(STM) in that it can image surfaces at atomic-scale resolution. The difference between AFM and STM is that AFM does not require that the sample be an electrically conducting material. Like STM, it uses an atomically-sharp tip that is brought very close to the surface. The tip will feel a chemical attraction or repulsion and will move up or down on its supporting cantilever. This movement is monitored by an optical laser beam as the tip is moved laterally across the surface. As in STM, rastering the tip across the surface produces a topographic map of the surface.

Gerber, comme une application du concept de microscope à effet tunnel (STM : «scanning tunneling microscope») [...] permettant l'étude de surfaces de matériaux isolants à l'échelle atomique. En combinant les principes du microscope à effet tunnel et du stylet profilométrique, les auteurs démontraient la possibilité d'imager, à l'air libre, la surface d'échantillons conducteurs ou non, avec une résolution latérale de 30 Å [angström] et une résolution verticale inférieure à 1 Å. La technique a, depuis lors, été adaptée à différents environnements tels que le vide, le milieu liquide, les basses températures, les champs magnétiques et aussi pour des applications en chimie ou en biologie. L'AFM est basée sur la mesure des forces entre un fin stylet et la surface étudiée. Le capteur de force est un ressort-lame (stylet) encastré à une extrémité et muni d'une pointe à l'autre extrémité; il est encore appelé «cantilever». Les forces d'interaction modifient la déflection ou la torsion statique ou oscillante du stylet. La mesure des déformations du «cantilever» dans les microscopes de force actuels s'effectue, le plus souvent, grâce à la déviation d'un faisceau lumineux («diode laser») réfléchi par l'extrémité du stylet, méthode proposée dès 1988 par G. Meyer et N. Amer [...] La majorité des utilisateurs cherche à obtenir des formes ou des tailles caractéristiques de la surface; en balayant l'échantillon sous le «cantilever», on obtient l'image AFM recherchée. Mais on s'est très vite aperçu qu'il était possible avec le même instrument de proposer des situations originales de «physique au nanomètre».

Weak interactions are responsible for the fact that all the more massive quarks and leptons decay to produce lighter quarks and leptons. When a particle decays, it disappears and in its place two or more particles appear. The sum of the masses of the produced particles is always less than the mass of the original particle. Pit sawing operations have a long and vibrant history. Well before circular saws were used to saw logs lengthwise, they were processed by placing them over a "pit"-hence the reference to "pit saw. "The saw operates vertically up and down. Operated by two men, a man on top, known as the "Top Dog", guided the saw as it was pulled down in a cutting motion by the "Underdog. "The "Top dog" recovered the saw and the "Underdog" then pulled it down in a cutting motion again. Needless to say the "Underdog" copped a fair bit of sawdust. The top of the saw has a fixed "tiller handle" so the topdog can guide it and cut a straight line. The lower part of the saw has a "block" which is easily detachable with a wedge. The block can be taken off to allow the saw to be threaded through the saw cut.

During that period they had campaigns praised zippers for promoting self-reliance in young. The first commercial production of zip-fasteners was when Whitcomb Judson started together with businessman Colonel Lewis Walker, the Universal Fastener Company to manufacture the new device.

The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test.

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard...

Surge-blocks, swabs, or plungers are disc shaped devices made to fit tightly within the well. Their edges are usually fitted with rubber or leather rings to make a tight seal against the well casing. A device used to prevent the formation of bridges in a grain mass or in grain storage facilities.

CONT

A debridger for finely divided solids fed from a hopper to a screw feed by gravity. It has a heavy base that can rest on the threads of the screw feed and will be moved up and down over succeeding threads. There is a member attached to the base for extending up centrally in the hopper with radial arms reaching near the walls of the hopper.
