Carotid endarterectomy(CEA) is surgery to treat carotid artery disease.... During a carotid endarterectomy, your healthcare provider will surgically remove plaque that builds up inside the carotid artery. He or she will make a cut(incision) on the side of the neck over the affected carotid artery. The artery is opened and the plaque removed. Your healthcare provider will stitch the artery back together. 2, record 1, English, - carotid%20endarterectomy

Once a ruck has formed you can only play the ball with your feet—playing the ball with your hands in a ruck is a penalty—and the offside rules are very strict. You have to join the ruck from behind—if you join from the side, that's a penalty. Rucking players try to push their opponents backwards and move the ball backwards with their feet, making it available for their teammates. Once it's out the back of the ruck, it can be picked up. The rules of the ruck favour the tackled player's team, but if the tackling team successfully push their opponents back and move the ball to their side with their feet, it's their ball. This is called a counter-ruck. 3, record 3, English, - counter%20ruck

The Dix-Hallpike test is typically performed in a doctor's office. The doctor will ask you to sit upright on an exam table with your legs stretched out in front of you and your head turned to one side. They will then ask you to lower your head and torso back so that you end up lying with your head stretched off the edge of the exam table, turned with one ear down at a 45-degree angle. If there are misplaced calcium deposits(also called canaliths) in the posterior canal of your inner ear, this will trigger vertigo symptoms. 4, record 6, English, - Dix%2DHallpike%20manoeuver

Squirrels mainly travel between the tree crowns. Wherever trees are too far apart, as is the case around roads, they venture onto the ground. As six roads cross through the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark, squirrels would end up as road kill victims. To put an end to this situation, six squirrel bridges were created in 2012. In places where several squirrels had been run over, rope bridges were created to give squirrels safe passage between the tree crowns on either side of the lane. 2, record 7, English, - squirrel%20bridge

To begin felling a tree, first cut out a notch on the side of the tree facing the direction you want it to fall. Make the notch by cutting in horizontally and following with an undercut sloping up to the horizontal cut.... After the undercut is started, swing the saw around and cut a short distance into two sides of the tree. This is called "cornering" and prevents the bark and the sides from tearing when the tree falls. 5, record 12, English, - cornering

Big Sisters and Big Brothers were agencies in Ottawa that provided adult friends and mentors to girls and boys in need in order to enable them to achieve their full potential as young men and women. Studies have shown that mentoring is the most effective way of helping a youngster deal positively with the challenges of growing up. For almost 30 years, these two agencies operated side by side in the Greater Ottawa Area. Now, we are one organization, with an aim to improve service delivery, expand the number of children we serve and present a more coherent fact to clients, funders and the general public alike. 1, record 27, English, - Big%20Brothers%20Big%20Sisters%20Ottawa

1, record 27, French, - Grands%20Fr%C3%A8res%20Grandes%20S%26oelig%3Burs%20d%27Ottawa

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense(lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond's surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn. Record number: 34, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 34, English, - spring%20overturn

turnover: A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Its usual form is cylindrical, with the screening plates forming the side walls, and a downward slope from feed to discharge end.(...) When "washing trommels" are used, the feed is picked up by internal lifters made of angle-iron, and is sprayed. The water runs out with the undersize and slime. 3, record 35, English, - washing%20trommel

SIAM is a technology that defies the current laws of imaging. It permits scientists to view images much smaller than the wavelength of light and approaching the atomic level, an achievement that has long been considered impossible according to the basic principles of classical optics. SIAM works by shining light through a thin sample onto an ultra-sharp, vibrating tip on the other side. The light scattering from the tip gets altered as the tip approaches within a nanometer from the sample surface, as it vibrates, due to the optical interaction with the local properties of the sample. An image is built up by recording the scattered light as the probe is scanned line by line. The scientists recorded the variations in the scattered light using a very sensitive device--an optical interferometer--which is capable of measuring modulations in light level corresponding to single photons. As the tip moved across the surface, these variations were mapped by a computer into a picture of the surface, showing features such as oil droplets and steps on mica that were only a few atoms in size. 3, record 47, English, - scanning%20interferometric%20apertureless%20microscope

1, record 47, French, - SIAM

Speed up effects : Tunnel effect. If you push an ordinary bicycle air pump,... you will notice that the air leaving the nozzle moves much faster than the speed with which you are pushing. The reason, of course, is that the nozzle is much narrower than the cylinder in the pump. If you take a walk between tall buildings, or in a narrow mountain pass, you will notice that the same effect is working : the air becomes compressed on the windy side of the buildings or mountains, and its speed increases considerably between the obstacles to the wind. This is known as a "tunnel effect. "So, even if the general wind speed in open terrain may be, say, 6 metres per second, it can easily reach 9 meters per second in a natural "tunnel". The perpetual inventory records(of course, he did not call them that) were to be kept in a sort of warehouse ledger which was in turn divided into three parts. The first part showed an account for the wool purchased from different individuals, the account being debited for acquisitions and credited for wool put into process by both grades and quantities(in pounds). The balance was the wool unprocessed. The second part of the warehouse ledger was a manufactory record or account, in which the wool carried to manufacturing was recorded on the debit side, while the credits showed the finished product, which was in turn transferred to what we call now a finished goods ledger. The finished goods ledger made up the third part of the warehouse ledger, and was debited for goods finished and credited for goods sold still in quantities only, the quantities, however, being pieces of cloth and not pounds as in the materials account. 2, record 62, English, - ledger

3, record 75, French, - avalement

The split position places front shin vertical to floor with front foot flat on floor. The rear knee is slightly bent with rear foot positioned on toes. The bar should be positioned directly over ears at arms length with back straight. Push up with both legs. Position feet side by side by bringing front foot back partway and then rear foot forward. Return to shoulders and repeat. 4, record 81, English, - split%20jerk

Chicane is created when traffic is forced to deviate around fixed objects in an otherwise-straight road. The road is, in effect, narrowed first from one side, then the other, and finally from the first side again, in relatively short succession. Chicanes break up the typically long sightlines along streets and thus combine physical and psychological techniques to reduce speeds. Kyphoplasty is a newer treatment for patients immobilized by the painful vertebral body compression fractures associated with osteoporosis. Like vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty is a minimally invasive procedure that can alleviate up to 90% of the pain caused by compression fractures. In addition to relieving pain, kyphoplasty can also stabilize the fracture, restore height, and reduce deformity.... Kyphoplasty is performed under local or general anesthesia. Using image guidance x-rays, two small incisions are made and a probe is placed into the vertebral space where the fracture is located. The bone is drilled and a balloon, called a bone tamp, is inserted on each side. These balloons are then inflated with contrast medium(to be seen using image guidance x-rays) until they expand to the desired height and removed. The balloon does not remain in the patient. It simply creates a cavity for the cement and also helps expand the compressed bone. The spaces created by the balloons are then filled with PMMA [poly(methyl methacrylate) ], the same orthopaedic cement used in vertebroplasty, binding the fracture. The cement hardens quickly, providing strength and stability to the vertebra, restoring height, and relieving pain. 1, record 87, English, - kyphoplasty

1, record 87, French, - cyphoplastie

Pyramid fire. This is the best of all campfires. Three or four logs about 3 ft. to 5 ft. long are laid side by side and across them another layer with, if you desire it, a third layer on top of these. On top of the top layer the starting fire is laid. This is built up finally like a small pyramid. This type of fire is lit at the top. the starter fire ignites the logs below with falling coals and so this fire burns down-wards. It radiates heat evenly all round, and requires no attention during the night. Also, because there is no falling in of the fire the risk of sparks spreading and starting a bushfire is greatly minimised. 1, record 88, English, - pyramid%20fire

1, record 88, French, - feu%20en%20pyramide

How to shuck an oyster? This method of oyster shucking is often used by restaurants for presentation purposes. Hold the oyster cup side down, flat side up, with the hinged or narrow end in your hand. Insert the knife about 1/3 back from the wide end of the oyster. Go in using the knife and cut the muscle. Be careful to keep your fingers out of the path of the knife. Detach the muscle from the bottom shell. Carefully roll the meat over, taking care to neatly detach the muscle underneath. 1, record 95, English, - oyster%20shucking

Choosing an external breast prosthesis after a mastectomy is one option for women who either elect to wait to have breast reconstruction or who choose not to have the additional surgery. An external breast prosthesis is an artificial breast form that can be worn after a mastectomy to help balance the body and anchor the bra on the side of the mastectomy from riding up, which helps prevent back and neck pain and a sagging shoulder. Breast prostheses are custom-made for most women and are made from several different types of material(such as silicone gel, foam, and fiberfill) that feel similar to natural breast tissue and are usually weighted so they feel the same as the remaining breast. Some prostheses adhere directly to the chest area and others fit into pockets of postmastectomy bras, which are fitted with pockets on the inside to hold the device in place. 1, record 99, English, - external%20breast%20prosthesis

A typical multi-head breaker is a rubber-tired, self-propelled unit which carries 1, 000 to 1, 500 pound hammers mounted laterally in pairs. Half of the hammers are in a forward row and the remainder diagonally offset in a rear row so that there is continuous breakage from side to side. Each pair of hammers is attached to a hydraulic lift cylinder which operates as an independent unit. Each unit can develop between 1, 000 and 8, 000 foot pounds of energy depending upon drop height selected. The units can cycle at a rate of 30 to 35 impacts per minute. The typical machine is eight foot wide and carries twelve hammers eight inches in width. An extension wing, carrying two 1, 500 pound hammers, can be added to each side for a total breaking width of up to 13 feet. Pavement breaking can be as narrow as 2. 67 feet or increased in increments up to 13 feet. Typical production rates per machine are 6000-8000 square yards per day. 1, record 100, English, - multi%2Dhead%20breaker%20machine
