CONT

Carotid artery stenosis is a condition that happens when your carotid artery, the large artery on either side of your neck, becomes blocked. The blockage is made up of a substance called plaque(fatty cholesterol deposits). When plaque blocks the normal flow of blood through your carotid artery, you’re at a higher risk of stroke.

OBS

Carotid artery stenosis is similar to coronary artery disease, in which buildup occurs in the arteries of the heart and can cause a heart attack.

The nanomotor has a positioning stroke up to some centimeters while operating with atomic resolution and thus builds a bridge over eight orders of magnitude. The nanomotor is a piezo driven linear motor consisting of a cylindrical housing and a slider with a free axial hole inside. It utilizes a piezo tube for fine positioning and a pulse wave produced by the same piezo tube for coarse movements. Every point of its stroke can be reached with a speed of up to 5 mm/s. In its free axial hole the nanomotor can transport a tip, a hose, an electrode, a hypodermic needle, a glass fiber or even a microgripper. The nanomotor is available in three different versions. The "small" nanomotor is half the size of a match stick. It can lift six times of its own mass. The dynamic force of this nanomotor is so high, that even imprints in diamond surfaces can be produced. Special versions of the nanomotor can operate in ultra high vacuum, in liquid helium, even under water or as non-magnetic drives.

OBS

Swinging the racket back and behind the body builds up the power and rhythm of a stroke.

OBS

Caution: the Spanish term "recorrido" is generic. In its most basic meaning the term denotes the path of a moving object (=trajectory, flight), whether it be a racquet, a ball or even a human body (= route, course). In some contexts, it is obvious that "recorrido" refers to the «swing» of a racquet as it comes in contact with the ball. In other cases, other more precise English equivalents - backswing, upswing, downswing, follow through, route - are recommended. Furthermore, in English one speaks of the "flight" or "trajectory" (=ES: vuelo, trayectoria o recorrido; FR: trajectoire) of the ball, the "path" (=ES: trayectoria; FR: élan) of the (racquet) swing, and the "path" or "route" (=ES: recorrido) of a person.

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

Both the French and Spanish make much use of the anglicism "drive", albeit not in a correct fashion: In English "drive" is supposed to imply a ball hit with a lot of pace to win a point outright, regardless of the type of spin used to accomplish this task, and regardless of which side it is hit (forehand or backhand). There is one other stroke for paddling a straight course that should be covered here. It is a very useful stroke for paddling in a strong wind, running rapids, and paddling silently to sneak up on animals. It is called the indian stroke or underwater stroke and is an extension of the Canadian stroke. As the paddle knifes forward, the grip of the paddle is rotated in the palm of your upper hand. The rotation makes it possible to bring the paddle around, ready for the next power stroke without taking the blade out of the water, it's a very nice stroke to know because with the paddle remaining in the water, the canoeist is in control throughout the entire stroke.

At the end of the J stroke, the paddle is kniffed forward underwater with the power face of the paddle almost flat and facing up. Steering is accomplished by pulling up on the blade as it is brought forward. About halfway through the recovery, the paddle is allowed to slip out of the water in readiness for the next power stroke. The trick is getting a very slight angle on the blade as it comes forward. If the angle is wrong the paddle will plane out of the water or drive too deep. The angle is controlled by the upper hand.

The narrow path of ionized air in which the lightning discharge current flows.

CONT

The ionized channel is a conducting path for the lightning discharge.

CONT

Cloud-to-ground [discharge. ]... Once a sufficiently high voltage difference exists for electrical breakdown to begin in the cloud, a streamer of electrons develops. This, in turn, can become a "stepped leader, "which approaches the earth in a series of rapid steps... The stepped leader produces an ionized channel(molecules in its path are stripped of electrons) and tends to follow a downward branching path. As soon as one of the branches is within five to 50 meters of the surface, another streamer advances upward to meet it along the path of least resistance(often through tall and pointed objects). Now an ionized path a few centimeters in diameter connects earth with cloud. Next, the "return stroke, "which carries a surge of current, travels up the ionized channel, lighting up the paths taken by the stepped leader.

OBS

Intense and very luminous discharge which immediately follows the leader stroke in the same channel but in the inverse direction.

CONT

When one of the streamers makes contact with the downward-moving stepped leader, a heavy surge of current... takes place... The surge causes a sudden luminosity to progress up the ionized path... This luminosity is called the return stroke and is the bright flash seen by the eye and recorded in the usual photographs of lightning.

CONT

La foudre. [...]

"Blow" is not a standard term used in tennis circles. However it can be used to describe the hitting the ball with the tennis racket. Related terms : drive, shot. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

The standard for lettering was established in 1935 by the American National Standards Institute(ANSI)... The standardized lettering format was developed as a modified form of the Gothic letter font. The term font refers to a complete assortment of any one size and style of letters. The simplification of the Gothic letters resulted in a simplification of elements for each letter that became know as single-stroke Gothic lettering... The term single stroke comes from the fact that each letter is made up of a single straight or curved line element that makes it easy to draw and clear to read.
