Leading up to fall migration, a number of bird species are known to gather at large communal roosting sites, which are often detected by NWS [National Weather Service] Doppler radar. The unique doughnut pattern, known as a "roost ring, "is the result of birds departing their roosting site in all directions, roughly in equal densities. As they travel further from their roosting site and reach higher altitudes, they are detected by radar until they either rise above or drop below the radar beam. 2, record 1, English, - roost%20ring

Squirrels mainly travel between the tree crowns. Wherever trees are too far apart, as is the case around roads, they venture onto the ground. As six roads cross through the Gijsbrecht van Aemstelpark, squirrels would end up as road kill victims. To put an end to this situation, six squirrel bridges were created in 2012. In places where several squirrels had been run over, rope bridges were created to give squirrels safe passage between the tree crowns on either side of the lane. 2, record 2, English, - squirrel%20bridge

The Sahara Desert is by far Earth's largest source of airborne dust, and the storms can arise at any time of year. In winter and spring storms, Saharan dust often ends up fertilizing the nutrient-poor soils of the Amazon rainforest. Dust storms in the summer tend to loft material higher into the atmosphere, allowing plumes to travel thousands of kilometres on high-level winds. Those summer seasonal wind patterns can carry the dust from Africa to the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. 2, record 4, English, - Saharan%20dust

Horizontal hydraulic fracturing is accomplished by drilling vertically to the depth of the shale formation, which is generally found between 0. 6 – 1. 5 km below the surface. When the gas-containing shale is intercepted, the drill bit is maneuvered to travel horizontally through the center of the formation for a distance of up to 1. 6km. Water, biocides, surfactants, sands, and other chemicals are forced into the borehole under extremely high pressure to induce fractures in the shale that allow gas to rise to the surface for collection... 1, record 8, English, - horizontal%20hydraulic%20fracturing

[The] step-index multimode fiber has a large core, up to 100 microns in diameter. As a result, some of the light rays that make up the digital pulse may travel a direct route whereas others zigzag as they bounce off the cladding. These alternative pathways cause the different groupings of light rays, referred to as modes, to arrive separately at a receiving point. The pulse, an aggregate of different modes, begins to spread out, losing its well-defined shape. The need to leave spacing between pulses to prevent overlapping limits bandwidth-that is, the amount of information that can be sent. Consequently, this type of fiber is best suited for transmission over short distances, in an endoscope, for instance. 2, record 10, English, - step%2Dindex%20multimode%20fiber

Between 1972 and 1977 several studies confirmed the hypothesis that air pollutants could travel several thousands of kilometres before deposition and damage occurred. This also implied that cooperation at the international level was necessary to solve problems such as acidification. In response to these acute problems, a High-level Meeting within the Framework of the ECE on the Protection of the Environment was held at ministerial level in November 1979 in Geneva. It resulted in the signature of the Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution by 34 Governments and the European Community(EC). The Convention was the first international legally binding instrument to deal with problems of air pollution on a broad regional basis. Besides laying down the general principles of international cooperation for air pollution abatement, the Convention sets up an institutional framework bringing together research and policy. The Convention on Long-range Transboundary Air Pollution entered into force in 1983. It has been extended by eight specific protocols. 2, record 16, English, - Convention%20on%20Long%2Drange%20Transboundary%20Air%20Pollution

What is "cone of scent"? Odour particles always travel in the shape of a cone. A cone of scent is always concentrated and narrow at the source, and becomes wider and more diluted the further it travels. When a detector dog detects a substance that it has been trained to interdict, it uses the cone of scent to pinpoint the source of the odour. It starts by moving from one side to the other and back again in order to define the search area. Then, by moving up and down the cone, the dog can determine in which direction the odour becomes stronger. The dog can then follow the ever-narrowing cone of scent to its source. 1, record 27, English, - cone%20of%20scent

1, record 27, French, - c%C3%B4ne%20de%20d%C3%A9tection%20olfactive

... another possible way of creating permeability in hot dry rocks is «impact fracturing». This method... [may be described in its principle. ] A bore, cased except near the lower extremity, is surmounted by a hydraulic accumulator, filled with water and pressurized by means of a pump until the accumulator weight is lifted. The lifting pressure should be perhaps about 90% of the estimated hydro-fracturing pressure. A dynamic blow would then be struck upon the top of the water column by means of some device resembling a pile-driver, so that shock waves would travel to the base of the bore and be reflected up and down at attenuating intensity. Very high instantaneous pressures would be generated which would fracture the rock, and it is expected that the steepness of the pressure rise would be such as to resemble explosive action, so that the «star» formation... would be produced. 1, record 35, English, - impact%20fracturing

The worst of these storms to affect New Zealand often occur in the second half of summer or in autumn. This is because sea surface temperatures remain high in autumn, allowing the tropical cyclones to retain intensity for longer as they travel away from the tropics, and the chance of encountering an outbreak of cold air surging up from the Antarctic increases as autumn progresses. 3, record 39, English, - outbreak%20of%20cold%20air
