The first major process in rebuilding a piano is disassembly, starting with the cabinet, then the strings, tuning pins, and finally the heavy cast-iron plate.... In a vertical [piano], first remove the front panels, upper pillars, lid, music shelf, fallboard, nameboard strip, keyslip, keyblocks, action, and keys. If you have a piano tilter..., move the piano far enough from the wall to tip it on its back. Stand the tilter up, center it behind the piano, and push it snugly against the back of the piano with the prongs under the bottom. With one assistant positioned in front to make sure the bottom can’t kick forward, tip the piano and tilter back together. The Red River style of log building construction was one of the original methods used in Canada. The logs were left rounded with notched ends. This type of construction consisted of a basic frame of grooved, vertical, squared posts, mortised and tenoned into sills at their bases or set directly into the ground(in rare, early cases), and at their tips, mortised and tenoned into squared plates. Horizontal, squared timbers were fixed between these posts, with the tenons of the horizontal timbers fitting into the vertical groove of the posts. Roof structures of varying types were built on the wall plates. Red River Frame construction allowed both flexibility and portability. Large buildings could be erected using short logs, and buildings could be easily dismantled, moved and put up elsewhere. For these reasons, Red River Frame was the predominant type of construction used in the Canadian West during the fur trade era. The Red River style of log construction has spread across North America and is currently enjoying new popularity. Red River log construction is yet another Metis contribution to the development of Canada. 2, record 18, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20construction

The application of geotextiles for prefabricated drains. Until the seventies, vertical drainage systems were mainly being applied in the form of sand drains. This method consisted of forming holes in the ground by means of water jets in combination with drills or bailers, until the desired depth was reached. These holes were then filled with sand..... Nowadays there are many brands and types of drains available. These can be roughly divided into the following groups: Non-woven drains.... Composite drains.... A built-up roofing consists of plies or layers of roofing felt bonded together on site with hot bitumen. A protective surface coating of gravel or slag is sometimes embedded in a heavy top coating of hot bitumen. It is laid down to conform to the roof deck, and to protect all angles formed by the roof deck with projecting surfaces, and forms a single-unit flexible waterproofed membrane fastened to the deck by cementing and nailing. The simple principle on flat roofs is to turn the membrane up to form a skirting or base flashing on the vertical surfaces, making a large watertight tray. The only outlets from this tray are the roof drains to dispose of water. 3, record 32, English, - build%2Dup%20roofing

3, record 33, French, - cumulus%20congestus

The technical name for these lasers is vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, or VCSELs("vixels"). The technology differs from that of other types of semiconductor lasers, which are long, rectangular structures that beam light out the sides and that show up in everything from CD players to transoceanic fiber-optic networks. The tiny vertical lasers, in contrast, eject photons from the surface of the semiconductor wafer on which they are manufactured, a design that offers distinct manufacturing advantages over edge emitters. 1, record 35, English, - vertical%2Dcavity%20surface%2Demitting%20laser

Plants with limbs that grow down, instead of up, can be spectacular. Horticulturally, the reason for this growth habit is a genetic mutation. Most plants have a central growth point that remains dominant, and the trunk and limbs grow vertically. In the weeping tree category, this growth control is interrupted. The new layer of growth is somehow superimposed over the previous layer, and is more horizontal than vertical. This growth pattern is known as plagiotropism. 1, record 39, English, - weeping%20tree

Roman stitch is a versatile, pretty, knotted stitch that can be worked in various sizes, either horizontally or vertically. To work vertically, begin at top right side of area. Work a horizontal stitch from left to right over 4 vertical threads, bring needle up 2 meshes to the left, and make a small vertical(holding) stitch over horizontal stitch and thread. Continue, bringing needle up in mesh directly below start of first stitch and repeating horizontal and holding stitches to end of area. Start next row at top, to left of row just completed. 1, record 44, English, - Roman%20stitch

Frederic Dumas... developed a device for measuring in three dimensions. This tool can be used on a site in which both horizontal and vertical measurements are desired.... Dumas’ device consists of a square metal frame... with graduated sides... the frame is mounted on adjustable legs. A horizontal bar, also graduated, slides across the frame at right angles to two sides and to this is attached a graduated rod with vertical motion.... This rod can be moved back and forth across the bar as well as up and down. After it is placed over an object or section of the site, the entire device is made precisely horizontal. When the tip of the vertical rod is positioned so that it touches an object, three measurements are attained at once. 1, record 52, English, - device%20for%20measuring%20in%20three%20dimensions

The exploration department at Cogema Resources... recognized the technical difficulties and expense encountered in drilling deep vertical holes. The solution was a technique called navigational drilling(or Navi-drilling) that was used in the oil industry and, less often, in mining.... Simply put, navi-drilling allows operators to begin drilling a new hole 500 to 600 metres below the surface by using a pre-existing "pilot hole. "This significantly reduces costs as the same hole is used for up to six navi-drilling holes. A steerable motor with a rotor system turns a cutting bit. The motor is powered by hydraulic force created by the mixture of water and drilling muds pumped inside the drill string. The fluid is pumped through the motor and returns to the surface at a rate of up to 250 litres per minute. Newbergh Industries Limited ("Newbergh") has developed and patented a technology which will greatly enhance the steering currently being used in oil and gas field directional drilling. This technology, which is known under the acronym of "HANDS", which stands for Hydraulic Activated Navigational Drilling System, will be incorporated in a so-called benthousing, which will make this piece of equipment remote adjustable whilst drilling for the first time. Its implication will improve drilling performance in terms of speed as well as quality and will result in considerable cost savings for the oil companies and savings in energy to drill the bore holes. 6, record 53, English, - navigational%20drilling

3, record 53, French, - forage%20multibranche

The shovel shear test provides information about the location where the snow could fail in shear. It is best applied for identification of buried weak layers and does not usually produce useful results in layers close to the snow surface. Soft snow near the surface is better tested with the tilt board and the shear frame or an improvised version of this tilt test. 3, record 56, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

Shovel Shear Test. This test can be done on a flat or on a slope. With good technique, the location of weak layers, even thin weak layers, can be found. First dig a hole or pit in the snow. The vertical wall of the pit should be straight up and down, and smooth. Make a mark on the uphill portion of one corner of your pit with your shovel blade. This will mark the boundaries of your column, which should be roughly 30 cm by 30 cm or 12 inches square.(A) Now, cut both sides using a snow saw or your ski, all the way to the floor of the pit making sure that the cuts are straight.(B) The back of the column should only be cut as deep as your shovel blade is long, so measure with your shovel blade(C) and then cut the back.(D) Next, insert your shovel, blade down, in the back cut of the column and pull gently and evenly forward being careful not to lever your shovel handle.(E) Examine the shear layer where the block failed.(F) The force applied to the shovel that causes a weak layer to shear from the layers surrounding it can be rated as follows : Very easy... Easy... Moderate... Hard... 4, record 56, English, - shovel%20shear%20test

Blood pressure measurement by sphygmomanometer is normally performed using a mercury manometer. This can consist of a U-tube half-filled with mercury, but more commonly it is a single tube, held vertical in use, which sits in a small reservoir of mercury. The reservoir is connected by a rubber tube to the source of air pressure to be measured. As pressure is applied mercury is forced up the column and the pressure can be read from a scale behind. The actual pressure is indicated by the difference in the level of the mercury in the column and the reservoir. 4, record 57, English, - mercury%20sphygmomanometer

A typical micronic type filter... utilizes an element made of specially treated paper which is formed in vertical convolutions(wrinkles). An internal spring holds the elements in shape. The micronic element is designed to prevent the passage of solids greater than 10 microns(0. 000394 inch) in size. In the event that the filter element becomes clogged, the spring loaded relief valve in the filter head will bypass the fluid after a differential pressure of 50 p. s. i. has been built up. Hydraulic fluid enters the filter through the inlet port in the filter body and flows around the element inside the bowl. Filtering takes place as the fluid passes through the element into the hollow core, leaving the foreign material on the outside of the element. 3, record 58, English, - micron%20filter

The MLS detects naturally occurring microwave thermal emissions from Earth's limb to create vertical profiles of atmospheric gasses, temperature, pressure and cloud ice. MLS looks 90° from the angle of UARS’ [Upper Atmosphere Research Statellite] orbit. Thermal radiation enters the instrument through a three-mirror antenna system. The antenna mechanically scans in the vertical plane through the atmospheric limb every 65. 5 seconds. The scan covers a height range from the surface up to 90 km(55 miles). Upon entering the instrument, the signal from the antenna is separated into three signals for processing by different radiometers. The 63-GHz radiometer measures temperature and pressure. The 183-GHz radiometer measures water vapor and ozone. The 205-GHz radiometer measures ClO, ozone, sulfur dioxide, nitric acid and water vapor. 2, record 64, English, - microwave%20limb%20sounder

The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 70, English, - supercell%20tornado

The American Space Agency Nasa... is putting several million dollars into the project under its advanced concepts programme. At the heart of a space elevator would be a cable reaching up as far as 100, 000km from the surface of the Earth. The earthbound end would be tethered to a base station, probably somewhere in the middle of the Pacific ocean. The other end would be attached to an orbiting object in space acting as a counterweight, the momentum of which would keep the cable taut and allow vehicles to climb up and down it. A space elevator would make rockets redundant by granting cheaper access to space. At about a third of the way along the cable-36, 000 km from Earth-objects take a day to complete a full orbit. If the cable's centre of gravity remained at this height, the cable would remain vertical, as satellites placed at this height are geostationary, effectively hovering over the same spot on the ground. To build a space elevator such a geostationary satellite would be placed into orbit carrying the coiled-up cable. One weighted end of the cable would then be dropped back towards Earth, while the other would be unreeled off into space. Mechanical lifters could then climb up the cable from the ground, ferrying up satellites, space probes and eventually tourists. The biggest technical obstacle is finding a material strong but light enough to make the cable; this is where the carbon nanotubes come in. These are microscopically thin tubes of carbon that are as strong as diamonds but flexible enough to turn into fibre. In theory, a nanotube ribbon about one metre wide and as thin as paper could support a space elevator. 2, record 72, English, - space%20elevator

2, record 72, French, - ascenseur%20spatial

The type of precipitation that will fall from clouds in any given storm is largely dependent on what is called the vertical temperature profile. A vertical temperature profile is a series of temperature measurements taken at various levels of the troposphere. Meteorologists send up weather balloons twice each day to detect the air temperatures at different elevations in the troposphere. During the winter months, access to temperature data reported back from weather balloons helps meteorologists to more accurately forecast what type of precipitation is on the way. Temperature profiles, however, can change completely due to many factors in the troposphere. 4, record 75, English, - vertical%20temperature%20profile

3, record 75, French, - profil%20vertical%20de%20temp%C3%A9rature

A valley breeze develops during the day as the sun heats the land surface and air at the valley bottom and sides... As the air heats it becomes less dense and buoyant and begins to flow gently up the valley sides. Vertical ascent of the air rising along the sides of the mountain is usually limited by the presence of a temperature inversion layer. When the ascending air currents encounter the inversion they are forced to move horizontally and then back down to the valley floor. This creates a self-contained circulation system. If conditions are right, the rising air can condense and form into cumuliform clouds. 3, record 77, English, - valley%20breeze

Ross House is important because it was the first Post Office in Western Canada. ... The construction of Ross House is a prime example of a Red River frame building. ... 2, record 86, English, - Red%20River%20frame%20building

Gyroscopes can be used as devices for direction finding, guidance, and control. If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb. 2, record 87, English, - gyroscopic%20phenomenon

Shiploaders are normally used in pairs with one man operating each loader. Grain is conveyed to the top of the shiploader and falls by gravity through a large spout into the ship's hold. These machines can normally swing from left to right, extend the boom and telescope and rotate the vertical spout. The operator, who sits in a cab mounted on top of the shiploader, can move the loader either up or down or backwards and forwards allowing it to reach into all parts of the ship's hold. Shiploaders are used extensively in many parts of the world. 1, record 95, English, - shiploader

2, record 95, French, - chargeur%20de%20navire

Later swathing will result in excessive shattering. If difficulties are encountered, it helps to swath when the crop is moist with dew or during a light drizzle. It also helps to equip the swather with dividers, which are usually steel rods which curve up above the crop and force the crop down where the knife cuts it off. Cutting the next swath in the opposite direction helps to pick up the strip pushed down by the divider. Electrically or hydraulically-driven vertical knives on the swather can also aid in dividing the crop. 2, record 96, English, - vertical%20knives

All the elastic components of GERB spring elements are made from helical springs with one or more spiral... The load-bearing capacity of the standard GERB steel spring elements goes up to 3200 kg for each element. The frequency in the direction of vertical vibration is about 1. 8-6 Hz. The GERB elements insulate machinery, and function as shock absorbers in all directions without blocking the six degrees of freedom... GERB steel spring elements are suitable for the support of :-Power station machinery(turbo-generators, blowers, coal pulverisers, boiler pumps, diesel engines) and pipelines;-Forge hammers, presses, machine tools, crushers, compressors and testing stands;-Precision machinery of every type such as laser equipment, testing machines, roll grinders, microscopes;-Buildings or parts of buildings. They are also used as oscillation dampers in the construction of bridges. 3, record 97, English, - spring%20box

The Binishell pneumatic-form construction technique for bulk grain is another interesting development in concrete storage. In this concept, reinforcing steel is laid out on the ground, concrete is poured on top of it, and the pneumatic form lifts the whole "pie" up from the centre to its final dome shape. After the concrete sets, the pneumatic form is removed. This type of dome can also be erected with vertical sidewalls to produce a conventional bulk storage bin, with a diameter as large as 30 metres. Research is currently under way aimed at using this system to achieve air tight concrete bulk grain tanks so that nitrogen gas and chemicals could be used to enhance grain keeping quality. 1, record 98, English, - Binishell%20pneumatic%2Dform%20construction%20technique

1, record 98, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20Binishell%2C%20%C3%A0%20coffrages%20pneumatiques
