Les options permettant de réduire la durée du swap visent à un objectif à peu près symétrique. Elles concernent une entité ayant un actif pouvant faire l'objet d'un remboursement anticipé, ou qu'elle souhaiterait revendre pendant son cours si le marché ou ses besoins l'impose. Cet actif apporte un revenu à taux variable que l'entité en question désirerait transformer en taux fixe. C'est pour répondre à ce type de situation qu'ont été créés les puttable swaps. Aux termes d'un tel swap, l'entité disposant de l'actif remboursable ou aliénable entre dans un swap assorti d'une option lui permettant de réduire sa durée, c'est-à-dire de sortir du swap au moment où elle le désire une fois une date seuil atteinte.
