CONT

A staghorn calculus is a type of kidney stone.... staghorn calculus is the name given to a branching kidney stone, and may form if you have repeated urinary tract infections(UTIs). If they form because of infections, they may be made of struvite which is a mix of magnesium, phosphate and ammonium. If they’re the result of a smaller stone growing larger over time, then staghorn calculi are often composed of calcium phosphate, calcium oxalate or a mix of calcium carbonate apatite along with struvite.

CONT

Stone formation in the human body is one of the most interesting subjects in medicine. The condition is apparently as old as the human race and has been mentioned in ancient medical treatises of many countries. Among all the locations in the human body, the urinary tract forms the most frequent site for stone formation. Bladder stones, also called bladder calculi, often form when concentrated urine sits in the bladder. As urine stagnates, minerals in the urine form various crystals that might combine to form stones.

CONT

DEF

The formation of urinary calculi, or uroliths, results when urinary solutes are precipitated out of solution. The obstruction of the urethra with these calculi is a fatal disease unless the obstruction is relieved.

OBS

In some local areas of North America, soil, pasture and forage types are such that steers are at increased risk of urolithiasis. It is believed that intact bulls can pass larger diameter calculi than steers, and in these areas (Western Canada), deferment of castration to permit greater urethral dilation is recommended.
