English

Subject field(s)
  • Animal Care Equipment (Farm equipment)
CONT

Because some bull customers want horns on their cattle, there are ways to manage horns to avoid problems. The oldest method is to use horn weights to train the horns to curve downward. Weights vary depending on the size of the animal and the horn and are placed on the ends of the horn and tightened with screws. A locking mechanism on the inside holds the weights firmly in place. Once the horn's growth is altered in the direction desired, the weights can be removed and the horns will resume normal growth.

DEF

A face proceeding towards the dip of the seam.

OBS

face: The surface exposed by excavation; a working place from which coal or mineral is extracted. In any drift, tunnel, or stope, the end at which work is in progress.

OBS

dip : a miner's word not found in the mining act. The term there used is downward course, which is synonymous with dip. The direction of the vein or lode as it goes downward into the earth is called the dip. It may vary from perpendicular to the earth's surface to an angle perhaps only a few degrees below the horizon. The same vein or lode may have different dips.

Swivelling nozzle for a rocket engine. The nozzle comprises a moving diverging portion and a static portion secured to the rear end wall of the combustion chamber of the engine. A cardan mount jointed link device connects the moving diverging portion of the nozzle to the static portion, the moving diverging portion and the static portion being in mutual contact via respective spherical surfaces, and an actuator device acts on the moving diverging portion of the nozzle so as to be able to vary the direction of the thrust vector of the engine by modifying the orientation of the nozzle with sliding of the spherical surfaces one on the other. Resilient return means are interposed between the moving diverging portion of the nozzle and the static portion and act on the moving diverging portion in order to urge it towards the static portion so as to keep the spherical surfaces in mutual contact for any desired orientation of the nozzle.

CONT

The use of flaps located on the trailing edge of an airplane wing to vary wing lift characteristics during various flight phases is well known. In the so-called single slotted flap arrangement, a wing flap is extended relative to the stationary wing of the aircraft so that a spanwise slot is formed between the trailing edge of the wing and the leading edge of the flap. This slot directs airflow from below the wing and the flap for subsequent discharge across the upper surface of the flap in the direction of and substantially parallel to the air normally flowing over the upper surface of the flap.

... veneer driers [in which] the stock to be dried [is] being propelled through the drier by a series of rollers ...

OBS

These driers may run up to 100 ft. in length and... may consist of two to six decks... Methods of propulsion through the driers vary considerably : generally veneer is held flat between mesh belts or bottom rollers with idle rollers above. Steam piping carefully positioned supplies the requisite heat. The drier may be ventilated along, or at right angles to, the direction of travel, the hot air being diffused against the passing veneer. The heating chamber is enclosed in a heavily insulated framework which prevents loss of heat by diffusion or radiation.

This adjustment is given in two ways : 1. With the patient in the neutral position, specific contact or contacts are taken on a vertebral process and the thrust is given in a specific direction... The thrust may be rapid with either a slow or fast release. 2. The adjustment is given by moving the patient in a specific direction to take out the active and passive motion at that level. The thrust is then given beyond the passive range of motion. It is possible to vary the velocity and depth or amplitude depending on the area being adjusted...

Slow-speed plows equipped with stepped knives generally cut only in one direction, the cutting run being made at speeds of 15-20 ft/min and the return being made at 30-60 ft/min. In order to maintain productivity with the slow-speed plows it is necessary to take as deep a slice as possible during the cutting run and the depth of slice may vary from 6 to 12 in., according to the hardness of the seam. The machine is hauled along the face by a 7/8 in. diameter wire rope which is wound by a 40-h. p. electrically driven winch located in the tail gate. Slow plows have been successfully used in conjunction with pre-cutting of the face but it appears that they will be superseded by rapid plows because of the greater productive capacity of the latter machines.

Rabot statique d'origine.
