Homologous recombination is that which we are taught about in introductory biology class. It is the crossing-over process observed during meiosis, though it occurs in bacteria as well. The process involves pairing up of similar DNA sequences, with then one sequence replacing the other, or indeed for meiotic crossing over, with the generation of now two recombinant strands, one for each chromosome homolog, rather than just one. In either case, key is that it is DNA that is highly similar in terms of DNA sequence that is being either replaced or swapped. This allows for a replacement of alleles following horizontal gene transfer, or allele swapping... 2, record 1, English, - homologous%20recombination

Big Sisters and Big Brothers were agencies in Ottawa that provided adult friends and mentors to girls and boys in need in order to enable them to achieve their full potential as young men and women. Studies have shown that mentoring is the most effective way of helping a youngster deal positively with the challenges of growing up. For almost 30 years, these two agencies operated side by side in the Greater Ottawa Area. Now, we are one organization, with an aim to improve service delivery, expand the number of children we serve and present a more coherent fact to clients, funders and the general public alike. 1, record 4, English, - Big%20Brothers%20Big%20Sisters%20Ottawa

1, record 4, French, - Grands%20Fr%C3%A8res%20Grandes%20S%26oelig%3Burs%20d%27Ottawa

But as we’ve grown further away from the farm, our food tastes have become more homogenized and pickier. So what does the spiritual name mean and why do we obtain them to begin with, well I was taught that the name is actually given to us by Gi’tchie Manito before we are born, and Creator passes this name onto us through a Name Giver or Elder. This name will represent who we are meant to be in our lives, and it is therefore our guide as we travel along our Red Road, that path being the one to our own self-enlightenment. 1, record 11, English, - spiritual%20name

1, record 11, French, - nom%20spirituel

Whether balancing on one foot, both hands, one hand or even on our head in headstand, we must find our centered midline of stillness. This asana practice is a meditation, as themind is focused on the body part(s) bearing our whole body weight; and therefore the mind cannot waver or wander, but must remain one-pointed and still to maintain balance. 2, record 14, English, - balance%20pose

Internalization occurs when objects are "installed" into the ego, such that they are both integral to sense of self and also experienced as separate and concrete internal objects. In this way, the external world is brought into the internal world and incorporated with it. When fully internalized, an item is fully "owned" and considered as normal. This is the process whereby the personality is created. Of the various notions of how we take in the internal world, internalization is one of the highest-level concepts. 67-12-06 Inspect tubes for internal corrosion/PCW [previously complied with].... there are two very comprehensive AD [airworthiness directive] listings pertaining to this aircraft generated by a repair station; one is dated 2004 and the other 2005. Both refer to AD 67-12-06 as having been "complied with, "the compliance date being given as 6/26/67. Now the question is : What does C/W mean? We all know that this common abbreviation stands for the words "complied with. If the resolution of the image is sufficiently high(e. g. 1m or less), it may be that each pixel will represent only one type of land cover, and so we can make an accurate ’hard’ classification. However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. As a result, a hard classification will probably represent only a part of the pixel and will inaccurately describe the remainder of the area covered by that pixel. 4, record 26, English, - hard%20classification

The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French :"driver's licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver's licence", but "learner's permit". 3, record 27, English, - licence

With so many issues competing for their attention, many academics display an initial reluctance to use technology in their learning and teaching. This is often attributed to lack of time, rather than lack of interest. Popular belief states that e-learning techniques are hugely time consuming and expensive. While we have not argued against this notion per se, we do believe that the approach one takes towards the creation of e-learning resources can have a huge impact upon the ’value for money’ and time considerations often put forward as reasons not to engage with e-learning. 4, record 29, English, - e%2Dlearning%20technique

They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. We have a lot of commercial zoning in Gateway.... The CM is an odd zone that came into being because of areas such as Hawthorne-there was a desire to try out a mixed-commercial zone. You actually have to put 50% residential in this zone-the only zone that has a required amount of residential. Then it goes up to CX, a high density commercial zone. One of the things that people don’t like is the strip commercial zone of CG and we don’t have much in Gateway. In a lot of zones you can build out to the entire site and with CS it is required. CX is a high-density commercial zone and is used downtown. The other two downtown zones, RX and CX, are close together and this has people very concerned. 1, record 37, English, - RX%20zone

The county has a fine police force, in fact it is one of the best in the country. When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 39, English, - mutual%20inductance

The ability of the human eye and brain to interpret differences in the perspective of two images as depth is called the stereo effect. The three-dimensional stereo image is called a stereomodel. When looking vertically down at the landscape, one can perceive differences in the heights of features, which gives a three-dimensional view. The strength of this stereo effect depends on the magnitude of the difference, called the parallax, in the two views. The closer the objects are to the camera(i. e., the taller they are), the more different are their relative positions within the image and the closer we perceive them to be. By measuring the parallax and knowing the specifications of the camera and the flying height, the elevation of features in the image can be calculated. 6, record 40, English, - stereomodel

The Income Tax Act recognizes a distinction between the "related" and "unrelated" business activities of charities. The distinction, as we shall see, is poorly defined at the margins, but the core idea is clear : a business is related if it directly advances the goals of the charity. The sales outlets of Goodwill Industries are a good example. An unrelated business, conversely, is one that does not directly advance the charitable purpose. 1, record 45, English, - unrelated%20business%20activity

There are two features of the ceiling of St Machar's which strike one immediately. In the first place it is a flat ceiling. The pool-sweep theory of intelligence. People who have large swimming pools often purchase a device called a pool-sweep, essentially a motorized float with long tentacles that sweep the bottom of a swimming pool. It has to be programmed to the shape of the pool, and then simply is left to do its work. When someone sees a pool-sweep in action for the first time, it looks very smart. It appears to go after the dirt and make its way around the pool as if it were being steered by a little man. It is indeed programmed in the sense that it has been given a set of instructions and it follows them. When we think of something as being programmed we imply that it is in some way intelligent, certainly more intelligent than something that hasn’t been programmed, or that cannot be programmed. People are fooled initially by the pool-sweep, and only see it for what it is after being told that it's just programmed for one pool, and if it were placed in a different pool it wouldn’t work. In a similar way, people can be fooled initially into thinking that computers are really smart of intelligent. 1, record 52, English, - pool%2Dsweep%20theory

In order to more readily understand a steam booster we should cover the basic construction of an average steam booster which would be as follows : A series of copper tubings or coils are fastened together so that a 120° water can be supplied at one end and(if all other requirements are met) 180° water will pass through the other end. This series of coils is placed inside a heavy metal container, the container also has an inlet and an outlet, into which we pass live steam at the required pressures. The steam circulates around the coils and losing its heat by transferring its high temperature to the lower temperature water, soon condensation accumulates at the bottom of the container. The condensation then passes through the discharge opening into either a waste line or what is known as a return line which is piped directly to the boiler where it is again heated into steam for recycling through the very same booster. 1, record 54, English, - steam%20booster

1, record 54, French, - r%C3%A9chauffeur%20%C3%A0%20vapeur

license : A right or permission granted in accordance with law by a competent authority to engage in some business or occupation, to do some act, or to engage in some transaction which but for such license would be unlawful... Finally, note that in Canada the British spelling(licence) is used more often than the American spelling(license), although both are found in Canadian texts. 2, record 55, English, - issuing%20of%20licenses

A stationary and non-accelerating flow is described with du/dt=dv/dt=0. With this,(7-3) becomes a set of differential equations for u, v whose solution yields the Ekman spiral. However, if we are not interested in accurate solutions and consider one layer only, we can see the meaning of the friction force as first shown by C. M. Guldberg and H. Mohn in 1883. The wind profile near the earth's surface is usually convex, if represented on a graph with wind speed versus height. The wind speed increases from zero at the earth's surface to significant values near the anemometer level, and further increase of wind speed with height continues at a slower rate. In this situation, the second derivatives of u and v may be assumed proportional to-u and-v, respectively : 2, record 56, English, - anemometer%20level

Flood-risk maps are the primary tool that guides the sensible use of flood-prone lands. They indicate flood-risk areas. The maps may also show the "20-year flood" and "100-year flood" levels(generally accepted terms for the statistical likelihood that every year there is a five per cent chance of the 20-year flood occurring, and a one per cent chance of the 100-year flood occurring at that location.... Like other natural events, floods seem to occur in long-term cycles. Consequently, by studying streamflow records over many years, we can estimate the probability of a dangerously high flow. This can be expressed either as a percentage or as a recurrence interval. For example, we may say a flood has a one-per-cent chance of occurring in any year, or we may call it a one-in-a-hundred year flood. Consequently, by studying stream flow records over many years, we can estimate the probability of a dangerously high flow. This can be expressed either as a percentage or as a recurrence interval. For example, we may say a flood has a one-per-cent chance of occurring in any year, or we may call it a one-in-a-hundred year flood. Many learning systems, especially early ones, are based on the physiological structure of the brain. Developers of these systems believe that the brain is very much like a computer that contains a relational data base. For example, in a relational data base, each piece of data contains information as to the addresses of other pieces of data.... The solving of a problem comes to the thinker by association-one fact or piece of data leading to the next. We refer to this method of information processing in a computer as a looping structure. 1, record 59, English, - looping%20structure

One country may be absolutely more efficient in the production of every good than is the other country; and this means the other country has an absolute disadvantage in the production of every good. But so long as there are differences in the relative efficiencies of producing the different goods in the two countries, we can always be sure that even the poor country has a comparative advantage in the production of those commodities in which it is relatively most efficient. 1, record 62, English, - relative%20efficiency
