Homologous recombination is that which we are taught about in introductory biology class. It is the crossing-over process observed during meiosis, though it occurs in bacteria as well. The process involves pairing up of similar DNA sequences, with then one sequence replacing the other, or indeed for meiotic crossing over, with the generation of now two recombinant strands, one for each chromosome homolog, rather than just one. In either case, key is that it is DNA that is highly similar in terms of DNA sequence that is being either replaced or swapped. This allows for a replacement of alleles following horizontal gene transfer, or allele swapping... 2, record 2, English, - homologous%20recombination

... one reason that bone health is difficult to maintain is that the skeleton is simultaneously serving two different functions that are in competition with each other. First, bone must be responsive to changes in mechanical loading or weight bearing, both of which require strong bones that have ample supplies of calcium and phosphorus. When these elements are in short supply the regulating hormones take them out of the bone to serve vital functions in other systems of the body. Thus the skeleton can be likened to a bank where we can deposit calcium or phosphorus and then withdraw them later in times of need. However, too many withdrawals weaken the bone and can lead to the most common bone disorder, fractures. 3, record 6, English, - bone%20health

1, record 13, French, - Grands%20Fr%C3%A8res%20Grandes%20S%26oelig%3Burs%20d%27Ottawa

But there is only one sun, so we have to wait for the sun to move to take another sun sight and get another position line. Ideally, we would take a sun sight in the morning and obtain a position line, and take another sight in the afternoon for a second position line. This will result in two almost perpendicular lines, which will give us the most reliable fix with two lines(the closer the lines are to [being] perpendicular, the less susceptible their crossing point is to error). 3, record 14, English, - sun%2Drun%2Dsun%20method

Most ecological and evolutionary problems have their basis in changes in the number of organisms. This is one reason why mathematics is an important tool for ecologists and evolutionary biologists. Another one is the overwhelming complexity of ecological systems. An ecosystem often contains hundreds or thousands of species that interact in a complex food web. All species are different and they change continuously... By formulating mathematical models of ecological and evolutionary processes we can to some extent study the behavior and even understand systems that are this complex. 2, record 20, English, - mathematical%20ecology

In general, Koreans place the endings "-uh" or "-mal" at the end of the name of a land to signify that that is the dialect spoken in the land. What distinguishes one suffix from the other is that the "-uh" came from a Chinese script while "-mal" came from the Korean alphabet. Hanguk is the shortened form of the word Dehhanminkuk meaning Republic of Korea. If the term "Hanguk" is considered and the suffixes "uh" and "mal" are put in then we would have "Hanguk-uh" and "Hanguk-mal" which show that we are referring to the language of Korea. 2, record 29, English, - Korean

The National Anthem of Canada.--"O Canada! Our home and native land! True patriot love in all thy sons command. With glowing hearts we see thee rise, The True North strong and free! From far and wide, O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. God keep our land glorious and free! O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. "O Canada, we stand on guard for thee. "--"O Canada" was proclaimed Canada's national anthem on July 1, 1980, one hundred years after it was first sung on June 24, 1880. The music was composed by Calixa Lavallée, a well-known composer; French lyrics to accompany the music were written by Sir Adolphe-Basile Routhier. The song gained steadily in popularity. Many English versions have appeared over the years. The version on which the official English lyrics are based was written in 1908 by Mr. Justice Robert Stanley Weir. The official English version includes changes recommended in 1968 by a Special Joint Committee of the Senate and House of Commons. Basic balance poses series. Balancing poses require tremendous concentration and focus. These qualities are further developed and refined through a regular yoga practice where we bring our attention to our center and hold ourselves up against the pull of gravity. Whether balancing on one foot, both hands, one hand or even on our head in headstand, we must find our centered midline of stillness. This asana practice is a meditation, as themind is focused on the body part(s) bearing our whole body weight; and therefore the mind cannot waver or wander, but must remain one-pointed and still to maintain balance. 2, record 34, English, - balance%20pose

Internalization occurs when objects are "installed" into the ego, such that they are both integral to sense of self and also experienced as separate and concrete internal objects. In this way, the external world is brought into the internal world and incorporated with it. When fully internalized, an item is fully "owned" and considered as normal. This is the process whereby the personality is created. Of the various notions of how we take in the internal world, internalization is one of the highest-level concepts. Elastic collision law. An important detail which has not been discussed carefully enough in the literature is the collision law for particle–particle and particle–wall collisions in the presence of a deforming particle shape or deforming wall. The collision law that we use is an elastic one, in the following sense : linear andangular momentum are conserved, and the direction of the relative normal surface-to-surface velocityv[ cross-radial] at the point ofcontact is reversed upon collision(but the magnitude is unchanged). It is most convenient to consider binary collisions only and then just take the limit that the ‘‘mass’’ of a hard wall goes to infinity. 1, record 42, English, - elastic%20collision%20law

We present a new Monte Carlo lattice model to study the folding of two-dimensional heteropolymer chains. Previous lattice model studies of two-dimensional chains have been performed on square grids using predefined "move sets" of allowed moves. The motion of the polymer chain in these models is thus highly constrained. To add greater flexibility, we use a triangular lattice and allow the chain to choose its own moves. Physically unrealistic moves are prevented by including kinetic energy effects in the Metropolis algorithm. From the results, we can characterize all of the possible one-and two-monomer moves and sort them according to relative importance. Greater flexibility in the lattice model produces several significant and interesting physical consequences. 1, record 49, English, - Monte%20Carlo%20lattice%20model

Ecological sampling methods. If we want to know what kind of plants and animals are in a particular habitat, and how many there are of each species, it is usually impossible to go and count each and every one present.... This problem is usually solved by taking a number of samples from around the habitat, making the necessary assumption that these samples are representative of the habitat in general.... Samples are usually taken using a standard sampling unit of some kind. This ensures that all of the samples represent the same area or volume(water) of the habitat each time. The usual sampling unit is a quadrat. Quadrats normally consist of a square frame, the most frequently used size being 1m². The purpose of using a quadrat is to enable comparable samples to be obtained from areas of consistent size and shape. Rectangular quadrats and even circular quadrats have been used in some surveys. 2, record 50, English, - ecological%20sampling

Not just simple responses to an external stimulus play a role in instinctive behavior; instinctive activity involves sequences of behavior that run a predictable course. These behaviors may last seconds, minutes, hours or even days. Exemplifying this, we can refer to a particular species of digger wasp, which finds and captures only honeybees. With no previous experience, a female wasp will unearth an intricate burrow, find a bee, paralyze it with a careful and precise sting to the neck, pilot back to her discreet home, and, when the larder has been supplied with the correct number of bees, lay an egg on one of them and seal the chamber.... Overall, one of the main distinctive features of instinctive activity is the ability to react to an external stimulus the correct way the first chance(and every time thereafter) the animal receives. This feature distinguishes this particular behavior from what ethnologists call learned behavior, which scientists have discovered are actions that take place from conditioning an animal to learn the right way. 1, record 52, English, - instinctive%20behaviour

The aim of World Religion Day is to foster the establishment of interfaith understanding and harmony by emphasizing the common denominators underlying all religions. The message of World Religion Day is that, mankind, which has stemmed from one origin, must now strive towards the reconciliation of that which has been split up. Human unity and true equality depend not on past origins, but on future goals, on what we are becoming and whither we are going. The prime cause of age-old conflict between man and man has been the absence of one ethical belief, a single spiritual standard-one moral code. 1, record 60, English, - World%20Religion%20Day

If the resolution of the image is sufficiently high(e. g. 1m or less), it may be that each pixel will represent only one type of land cover, and so we can make an accurate ’hard’ classification. However, for lower-resolution images-the kind that are more readily available for different places and for different times-each pixel is likely to represent a mix of different land-cover types. As a result, a hard classification will probably represent only a part of the pixel and will inaccurately describe the remainder of the area covered by that pixel. 4, record 61, English, - hard%20classification

The term "licence" is not invariably translated by the French "licence" although it is in most cases. The reason is that in English the term does not necessarily imply a business or occupation as does the French :"driver's licence" and "marriage licence" are examples of this. One must therefore be careful in translating "licence"--its usual French equivalent is "licence", but in some cases it can be "permis". An important characteristic distinguishing "licence" from "permit" is the fact that the former is not issued directly by the government but rather by a competent authority or by local authorities, while any of the three groups mentioned can issue a permit. Also, the licence is usually granted for an extended period of time whereas the permit normally authorizes an act of short duration. For example, we say "driver's licence", but "learner's permit". 3, record 62, English, - licence

If you agree on these two points you will also agree there really isn’t such a thing as a high-level skill, just the ability to combine the basics. The whole point is that real skill at anything comes from mastery of the simplest elements - the basics. With so many issues competing for their attention, many academics display an initial reluctance to use technology in their learning and teaching. This is often attributed to lack of time, rather than lack of interest. Popular belief states that e-learning techniques are hugely time consuming and expensive. While we have not argued against this notion per se, we do believe that the approach one takes towards the creation of e-learning resources can have a huge impact upon the ’value for money’ and time considerations often put forward as reasons not to engage with e-learning. 4, record 72, English, - e%2Dlearning%20technique

The modern world is full of large data sets : census data, multimedia databases, and remote sensing data, to name a few. They are also high dimensional, meaning that there are many measurements taken of each person, multimedia object, or point on the ground. The "data point" representing one person is made up of their age, gender, educational level, occupation, and whatever else was recorded. Suppose there are 12 attributes recorded for each person. "When a locomotive finishes its run, it is usually taken to an engine terminal. At the terminal is the roundhouse, where engines are cleaned and given light or "running" repairs, and made ready for their next runs. The engine terminal also includes a coaling station, a water tank, a sand house, an oil house and an ash pit... The roundhouse is a sort of locomotive garage. its name is derived from its shape. After a murder, the serial murderer thinks of how the crime could have been bettered.... When he follows this sort of train of thought, his mind jumps ahead to how he can kill more nearly perfectly the next time; there's an improvement continuum.... Urban commercial districts are based on this foundation of central cores existing in the city in combination with the impetus of a wil on the part of the associated shopkeepers themselves to renovate and raise their profile, and promotion on the part of the Town Council through urban renewal projects to augment the attractiveness and appropriateness of public spaces. Barcelona has become an international reference point for this commercial urban planning. In addition, we have one of the most complete urban commercial offers in the whole of Europe, with a highly appreciated level of quality. It is not surprising, then, that Barcelona is the city in Spain where tourists spend most on purchases and that it has been verified that most of those purchases are made in shops on commercial streets. 1, record 85, English, - commercial%20urban%20planning

You actually have to put 50% residential in this zone-the only zone that has a required amount of residential. Then it goes up to CX, a high density commercial zone. One of the things that people don’t like is the strip commercial zone of CG and we don’t have much in Gateway. In a lot of zones you can build out to the entire site and with CS it is required. CX is a high-density commercial zone and is used downtown. The other two downtown zones, RX and CX, are close together and this has people very concerned. 1, record 86, English, - RX%20zone

When AC is applied to a coil, a varying magnetic field will be produced around it. When another coil is placed within that magnetic field, it will induce a current flowing in that coil. This principle is called MUTUAL INDUCTANCE The amount of mutual inductance between the two coils depends on the distance between the two coils, and the angle between the two coils. When two coils are linked together via mutual inductance in this manner, we say that the coils are inductively COUPLED. When the mutually inductive coils are close to each other, we say that they are closely, or tightly coupled. When they are far apart, we say that they are loosely coupled. The greatest amount of coupling occurs when the coils are wound one directly over the other and on a closed iron core. The quantity of coupling between two coils is sometimes referred to as the Coefficient of Coupling. 2, record 89, English, - mutual%20inductance

The ability of the human eye and brain to interpret differences in the perspective of two images as depth is called the stereo effect. The three-dimensional stereo image is called a stereomodel. When looking vertically down at the landscape, one can perceive differences in the heights of features, which gives a three-dimensional view. The strength of this stereo effect depends on the magnitude of the difference, called the parallax, in the two views. The closer the objects are to the camera(i. e., the taller they are), the more different are their relative positions within the image and the closer we perceive them to be. By measuring the parallax and knowing the specifications of the camera and the flying height, the elevation of features in the image can be calculated. 6, record 91, English, - stereomodel

SIR... stands for Standard Interface Rack. SIR is a system for integrating hardware. It is a technology we use to take Earth things to space. The rack contains mechanical parts, called a liner, used to slide drawers in and out, much like a file cabinet. Drawers are used to contain or repackage things and make them flight ready. For example, we can’t take computers to space in the same outer packages or cases we use on Earth because some pieces may float out or the vibration from launch would destroy them. So, we take all the computer's guts from the central processing unit(its brain) and repackage it in one of these drawers. On the rack side, the SIR also provides power and data for the drawers through cables. Power for a drawer comes from a connector in the rack, just like a wall outlet at your house. Data cables serve many purposes, but the main one is for communication. This is so drawers can "talk" to each other, the Space Station, and Earth. For the computer drawer mentioned above, parts are wired to connectors in the drawer. When you slide the drawer into the rack, it connects to cables already in the rack. 2, record 96, English, - standard%20interface%20rack

Sales-to-assets ratio provides an indication of the general efficiency of an organization, which gives an idea of how the assets are used. This ratio measures the ability of the firm to sell goods with one unit of assets. A high sales-to-assets ratio is generally preferable because it indicates a good ability of the firm to generate sales with a minimum of assets. However, since the indicator is a ratio, a high sales-to-assets ratio could be derived from a small amount of assets. In this case, the firm could be providing poor service to its customers or struggling from inefficient production. Similarly, a low ratio may indicate either lower than normal sales or higher than normal assets. Therefore, we should be cautious when interpreting the sales-to-assets ratio. 1, record 99, English, - sales%2Dto%2Dtotal%20assets%20ratio
