This half-hour film takes a critical look at the North American toy industry, focusing primarily on war games aimed at young boys and sexist dolls and games aimed at young girls. Toy designers and manufacturers describe their philosophies and their products, while [salespeople] at toy trade shows demonstrate the marketing campaigns used in this billion-dollar industry. Victimization surveys have repeatedly shown that the risk of victimization decreases with age. In Canada, the General Social Survey, which measures victimization in the general population, does not include youth under 15 years of age. The information available regarding the victimization of children and youth comes from official sources such as Youth Protection Services and the police. Big Sisters and Big Brothers were agencies in Ottawa that provided adult friends and mentors to girls and boys in need in order to enable them to achieve their full potential as young men and women. Studies have shown that mentoring is the most effective way of helping a youngster deal positively with the challenges of growing up. For almost 30 years, these two agencies operated side by side in the Greater Ottawa Area. 1, record 10, French, - Grands%20Fr%C3%A8res%20Grandes%20S%26oelig%3Burs%20d%27Ottawa

Educating for Peace works with the school system to build a peaceful, just and sustainable world for our children. We know that peace education helps students to transform conflict in their own lives, understand and respect other cultures and ways of living, and treasure the Earth. Teachers of peace education encourage their students to cooperate with each other, think critically, solve problems constructively, take part in responsible decision-making, communicate clearly, share their feelings and commitments openly. These skills and values are essential for survival in an increasingly interdependent world, where violence has become an instrument of policy, yet still breeds more violence. 1, record 39, English, - Educating%20for%20Peace

New evidence on the effects of early experiences on brain development, school readiness and health in later life has sparked a growing consensus about early child development as a powerful determinant of health in its own right. At the same time, we have been learning more about how all of the other determinants of health affect the physical, social, mental, emotional and spiritual development of children and youth. For example, a young person's development is greatly affected by his or her housing and neighborhood, family income and level of parents’ education, access to nutritious foods and physical recreation, genetic makeup and access to dental and medical. 1, record 41, English, - Determinant%20of%20Health%208%20%2D%20Healthy%20Child%20Development

To assess the sensitivity of isocapnic hyperventilation with cold air in detecting airway hyperreactivity in asthmatic children, we studied 13 asthmatic patients... and 10 normal children. Cold air challenge consisted of 4 minutes of moderate hyperventilation plus another 4 minutes of maximal hyperventilation, both with subfreezing air(-16 degrees to-18 degrees C)... We conclude that exercise and cold air-induced bronchospasm have different physiologic mechanisms, and that cold air testing can be used as a routine challenge to identify airway hyperreactivity in children. 1, record 54, English, - isocapnic%20hyperventilation%20with%20cold%20air

... intelligent machines open up a world of possibility, speculation, and intellectual enrichment that could be-and for our children will be-the intellectual' s instrument par excellence, a means of testing hypotheses, examining theories, playing "what if?" games, and reshaping human thought at a level complexity that no other intellectual tool-certainly not the written word, not any form of graphics we use now, or mathematics-has ever been able to provide. The extension of human intellect that the Fifth Generation will give us is simply staggering. 1, record 56, English, - intelligent%20machine
