In our recent ethnographic explorations we work with people who have moved from non-rural contexts to the countryside for ideological and/or practical reasons to implement the peasant lifestyle and economy... We use the concept of "neo-peasants" to define this group. Many of neo-peasants believe that a sustainable lifestyle can only be implemented in the countryside, and that cities are by definition unsustainable. They mainly originate from movements that call for self-management, direct democracy, responsible consumption, food sovereignty, autonomy, and degrowth. 1, record 2, English, - neo%2Dpeasant

Multi-byte... means two or more bytes. When we assign character codes to all characters for a specific language(or a group of languages), one byte(8 bits) can represent 256 different characters. Two bytes(16 bits) can represent up to 65, 536 different characters. However, two bytes are still not enough to represent all the characters for many languages. With the information gained from the EMC model we began to look for other viruses that might induce diabetes in mice, particularly those viruses that also infect human beings. One likely candidate was the Coxsackie family of viruses... these viruses have RNA as their genetic material. They can cause upper-respiratory distress and muscle pain and can infect the heart and brain. Soon after the discovery of the Coxsackie viruses Gilbert Dalldorf... and A. M. Pappenheimer... found that infection of mice with members of the virus group designated Coxsackie B caused severe destruction of the acinar cells in the pancreas but spared the adjoining islet of Langerhans. 3, record 14, English, - Coxsackie%20B%20virus

1, record 14, French, - virus%20Coxsackie%20B

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 15, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 15, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

The Aboriginal Pipeline Group was created in 2000 following meetings in Fort Liard and Fort Simpson. Thirty Aboriginal leaders from all regions of the Northwest Territories signed the resolution that created the APG and set its goals. The APG(Aboriginal Pipeline Group) represents the interests of Aboriginal people in the Northwest Territories in maximizing the ownership and benefits in a Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline. The main reason for creating APG was to offer a new model for Aboriginal participation in the developing economy, to maximize ownership and benefits from a proposed Mackenzie Valley pipeline and to support greater independence and self-reliance among Aboriginal people. Through the Aboriginal Pipeline Group(also known as the Mackenzie Valley Aboriginal Pipeline Corporation), Aboriginal northerners are now in a position to maximize both ownership and benefits of a Mackenzie Valley natural gas pipeline. But that doesn’t mean we are any less concerned about the protection of our land. 1, record 25, English, - Aboriginal%20Pipeline%20Group

A social convention is a regularity wide by observed by some group of agents. But not every regularity is a convention. We all eat, sleep and breathe, yet these are not convention. In contrast, the fact that everyone [in Canada] drives on the night, side of the road rather than the left is a convention. We also abide by conventions of etiquette, dress, eating and so on. Family intervention. Intervention with families can be viewed as an extension of individual work, as a form of group work, or as a form of practice separate from both. While all three views have support, we view family work as an extension of individual casework practice as well as a bridge to group work. Often, families become involved in treatment as an outgrowth of an individual' s course of intervention. For example, a woman who is seeing a social worker to help her address anxious feelings may agree with the worker that including her family would be beneficial. 3, record 29, English, - family%20intervention

Though we have come a long way, there are still many challenges ahead. Canadian society has become considerably more diverse since Confederation. Aboriginal peoples are gradually taking their rightful place in the country's governance. There has been a tremendous influx of immigrants, and Canadian multiculturalism attests to the country's desire to recognize this variety of ethnocultural identities while encouraging national cohesion. Group identities are less centered on language and religion than in the 19th century and involve a sense of belonging to many different groups. 1, record 33, English, - group%20identity

Self-categorization theory is a social psychological theory developed by John Turner(1985) and colleagues(Turner, Hogg, Oakes, Reicher & Wetherell, 1987). In simple terms, the theory postulates that at different times we perceive ourselves as unique individuals and at other times as members of groups and that these two are equally valid expressions of self... Self-categorization theory has been applied to many processes in social psychology, in particular social stereotyping, social judgment, crowd behaviour, small group processes, but arguably its most extensive application to date has been the explanation of social influence... 2, record 39, English, - self%2Dcategorization%20theory

Cela ne nous empêche toutefois pas d'accueillir les femmes qui souhaitent se joindre à nous, de n'importe quelle partie de la région. Beginning in 1992 and culminating in 2004, the Rotman Canadian Woman Entrepreneur of the Year Awards paid tribute to Canada's most successful female entrepreneurs for their important contributions to the economy. The program was an initiative of the University of Toronto's Rotman School of Management and BMO Financial Group. The purpose of these Awards was to provide national recognition to Canada's women entrepreneurs, whose successful businesses and achievements contribute so much to the Canadian and global economies as well as to their communities. By honouring these entrepreneurs, we helped to advance their business and personal networks; provide significant profile and visibility for them and their businesses; create additional opportunities to actively participate on for-profit and non-profit boards, government committees and/or industry associations; and increase the number of role models and mentors for all entrepreneurs, both male and female. 1, record 43, English, - Rotman%20Canadian%20Women%20Entrepreneur%20of%20the%20Year%20Awards

All programming (for sequential, digital computers, at least) is, by definition, procedural. But there’s a difference between a procedural application and application procedures. The former term refers to a (possibly large and typically unique) interconnected tapestry of instructions, while the latter identifies a cluster of logical components, which can become building blocks for any number of different programs. This separate and independent, or modular, nature of the procedures makes programming easier to write and easier to debug and maintain. 3, record 62, English, - scriptlet

1, record 62, French, - scriptlet

Segregation in perception refers to grouping together the parts of objects and distinguishing different objects. Our perceptual apparatus segregates sensory input in so effortless a fashion that it hardly seems that segregation is a task that must be actively performed. Consider, though, the visual information provided when we look at a person sitting in a chair. We readily group together the areas of the visual image that belong to the person and those that belong to the chair. We do not, for instance, mistakenly group together the person's left leg with the legs of the chair. 1, record 63, English, - perceptual%20segregation

When Namoi vetch was fed to pigs, the first feed was consumed without problems, the next feed-intake was always depressed. Nitric oxide, derived from the guanine group of arginine, is known to play an important role in the control of blood pressure in rats via the relaxation of aortic rings but is also acts to control peristalsis. We have therefore hypothesised, that the delayed feed in take-inhibition is due to the inhibition of nitric oxide mediated peristalsis by canavanine acting as an arginine look-alike. Support for this hypothesis, can be inferred from a report by Thomas and Rosentahl(1987) of constipation in rats fed canavanine. 1, record 64, English, - delayed%20feed

In summary, the Cauchy motion is the map on a Brownian motion of a linear Lévy dust. Recalling that decimation was the Romans’ charming way of punishing a hostile group by killing every tenth member, we see that Cauchy motion is obtained by a fractal form of decimation. It was pioneered in Bochner 1955. 1, record 66, English, - Cauchy%20motion

Malignant catarrhal fever(MCF) is a often fatal disease of cattle and wild ruminants, including some endangered species. The disease is caused by a group of herpesviruses that exist in nature as inapparent infection in certain species such as sheep. In order to better understand the epidemiology of the disease and to control the disease, we used a more reliable serological assay(competitive-inhibition ELISA) recently developed in our laboratory to determine the natural infection rate in wild and domestic ruminants in the US. 1, record 67, English, - competitive%20inhibition%20enzyme%2Dlinked%20immunosorbent%20assay

In the early 1900s, popular thinking among farmers had led to rejection of the portion of Jeffersonian thought that held individualism to be supreme. Politically, this led to establishment of organizations, such as the Grange. Farmers felt that they should develop and share technological knowledge among themselves. There were two sources of that knowledge. The "systematic agriculturists" looked to the emerging industry as their model. The second group, the "scientific agriculturists", looked to nature as their model, with the objective of rationalizing and formalizing their experiences as "natural historians"(Marcus, 1985). At the same time, land-grant scientists were beginning to have an impact(Rossiter, 1975). It is these philosophies and to these turn-of-the-century farmer-scientist groups that we can trace the roots of much of the current debate on sustainable agriculture. 1, record 74, English, - systematic%20agriculture

Recently, several mesoderm-inducing factors(MIFs) have been discovered. These cause isolated Xenopus animal caps to form mesodermal cell types such as muscle, instead of their normal fate of epidermis. The MIFs fall into two classes. One comprises members of the fibroblast growth factor(FGF) family, and the other members of the transforming growth factor type beta(TGF-beta) family. Of the latter group, the most potent is XTC-MIF, a protein produced by Xenopus XTC cells. Here we show that XTC-MIF is the homologue of mammalian activin A. 3, record 79, English, - mesoderm%20inducing%20factor

... a variable equalizer used... [in sound production, transmission or recording systems]. The equalizer consists of two units : an amplifier and a group of resonant circuits; and a control panel containing a group of attenuator controls, with straightline characteristics, operating in conjunction with a panel designed to show the equalization graphically by the position of the equalizer controls. Each control permits a portion of the audio frequency spectrum to be increased or decreased 8 dB in steps of 1 dB. Frequencies of 63, 160, 400, 1000, 2500, and 6300 Hz have been selected to provide a balanced energy response in the intermediate frequencies. Because of the control panel design...
