Motonormativity is a term [that] describes a collective, largely subconscious bias towards car-based transport as the means by which people do and/or should get around. On this view, car-centricity is treated as both an "is" and an "ought" : it is simply a fact about the world(regrettable or otherwise) that we must accommodate, and/or it is a system of mobility freedom we should value and protect, or aspire to build or extend.... motonormative presumptions lead people to accept harms caused by cars that they judge unacceptable in other settings, or if caused by other means, and to temper or suspend forms of moral judgement that they apply in those other contexts. 3, record 1, English, - motonormativity

... one reason that bone health is difficult to maintain is that the skeleton is simultaneously serving two different functions that are in competition with each other. First, bone must be responsive to changes in mechanical loading or weight bearing, both of which require strong bones that have ample supplies of calcium and phosphorus. When these elements are in short supply the regulating hormones take them out of the bone to serve vital functions in other systems of the body. Thus the skeleton can be likened to a bank where we can deposit calcium or phosphorus and then withdraw them later in times of need. However, too many withdrawals weaken the bone and can lead to the most common bone disorder, fractures. 3, record 2, English, - bone%20health

The ICBL was launched in October 1992 by a group of six non-governmental organizations : Handicap International, Human Rights Watch, Medico International, Mines Advisory Group, Physicians for Human Rights and Vietnam Veterans of America Foundation. These founding organizations witnessed the horrendous effect of mines on the communities they were working with in Africa, Asia, the Middle East and Latin America and saw how mines hampered and even prevented their development efforts in these countries. The International Campaign to Ban Landmines(ICBL) is a global network in over 70 countries that works for a world free of antipersonnel landmines and cluster munitions, where landmine and cluster munition survivors can lead fulfilling lives. The Campaign was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in recognition of its efforts to bring about the 1997 Mine Ban Treaty. Since then, we have been advocating for the words of the treaty to become a reality, demonstrating on a daily basis that civil society has the power to change the world. As a member of the Cluster Munition Coalition, the ICBL is engaged in the global effort to ban cluster munitions and to address their humanitarian impact. In December 2006, the ICBL decided to engage extensively in the global effort to prohibit cluster munitions. This marked the first time that the ICBL had become significantly engaged on an issue other than antipersonnel mines. The main reasons for the ICBL' s decision were that cluster munitions inevitably end up leaving behind large numbers of unexploded ’duds’ which behave essentially like antipersonnel mines; that many ICBL members had been already working extensively on cluster munitions; and that international efforts to achieve a global ban on cluster munitions were at a crucial point, a point where the ICBL could have a meaningful impact. 1, record 9, English, - International%20Campaign%20to%20Ban%20Landmines

1, record 9, French, - Campagne%20internationale%20pour%20interdire%20les%20mines

Combinatorial Library. Martek's proprietary drug discovery technology is based on a robust and versatile reaction platform that generates a diverse collection of small organic compounds by carrying out multiple chemical reactions simultaneously with given sets of chemical substrates. The optimal leads can be used directly as drugs if desired. To construct these chemical libraries, we use a collection of unique chemical entities and an array of different chemical reactions. These chemical libraries consist of a collection of single compounds stable for long term storage in an ordered molecular archive. Once a desired biological activity is identified, characterization of an active chemical lead is straightforward because the molecular archive is made up of individual compounds. The distinction between our technology from the others is the ability to quickly transform suboptimal leads to optimal ones, thereby establishing a few highly potent drug candidates for a given targeted disease in a short period. 1, record 13, English, - combinatorial%20library

[Silver, copper, lead and zinc] form compounds with sulphur, called sulphides. Deep in the Earth's crust, where it is very hot, salty water(called brine) circulates and dissolves these metals, collecting them up and concentrating them in the hot brine.... Sometimes, on the sea floor, this brine comes up through the surface out of holes we call vents. When the hot brine comes into contact with the cold sea water the metal sulphides cannot stay dissolved and precipitate onto the sea floor as various minerals. 2, record 14, English, - hot%20brine

We particularly adhere to the description by Hildreth & Moorbath(1988) of crustal-scale subvolcanic feeders as "magma percolation columns" wherein new inputs from depth preferentially follow previously used conduits, leading inevitably to the formation of hybrid magmas. The high surface to volume ratios of dike-like feeders, compared with the equant chambers that feature so prominently in much petrologic thinking, lead intrinsically to relatively rapid cooling, hence efficient differentiation. 4, record 18, English, - subvolcanic%20feeder

The TOPEX/Poseidon(T/P) altimetry data were obtained mountainous topography may lead the altimeter to lock off completely, requiring some time to lock on again, even over water and for narrow rivers, the instrument may deliver no reliable measurement at all. In other cases, the instrument could remain locked on water while the satellite is well ahead of the water body, since the reflected signal on water has more power than the reflected signal on land. This may cause a geometric error that could reach several meters for some regions. In order to minimise potential contamination of the T/P signal by land reflections, and at the same time to retain a sufficiently large number of altimeter measurements on water, we performed a geographical selection of the data. 2, record 23, English, - geometric%20error

How does an instructor facilitate learning through discussion in an online classroom? Most of us do this every day in our traditional face-to-face classrooms. We lead our students through discussions using strategies that promote reflection and further exploration of issues and topics. We use specific questioning techniques that draw out our students’ opinions, prior knowledge and experience upon which they construct new knowledge. Discussions have long been a valuable method of learning through interaction with other learners and all teachers know how effective this shared learning is for the application of knowledge. The same premise holds true in the online class. Students are encouraged to participate in discussions as they share prior knowledge and experience and use that as a stepping stone in constructing new knowledge. 1, record 25, English, - shared%20learning

Inducible NO-synthase in skeletal muscle. The expression and localization of inducible nitric oxide(NO) synthase(NOS II) was evaluated as a source of NO which has been shown to affect muscle contraction. Advanced stages of chronic heart failure are associated with systemic activation of cytokines which have been shown to stimulate the expression of NOS II in various cell types, including myocytes. Differential Display is a powerful technique for identifying and isolating genes that display modulation under a given stimulus or environmental perturbation. The DDRT-PCR Kit from Display Systems Biotech provides a comprehensive protocol and complete set of reagents to perform this process in your own lab. Despite the widespread acceptance of the DDRT-PCR Kit as a gene discovery tool, the protocols remain labor-intensive and can take several weeks to obtain the desired results. 1, record 31, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20criblage%20diff%C3%A9rentiel%20par%20PCR

Alpha and beta interferons play an important role in the regulation of the normal immune response. The abnormal production of type I interferons can, however, lead to an inappropriate immune response and to the development of autoimmunity and to the rejection of allografts. The cloning of the type I interferon receptor in our laboratory has enabled us to synthesise soluble variants of the receptor and to isolate a monoclonal antibody capable of inhibiting the biologic action of all the type I interferons tested. We have shown that treatment of monkeys with the anti-interferon receptor antibody together with a subeffective dose of cyclosporin A results in permanent survival of skin and bone marrow allografts. 1, record 33, English, - anti%2Dinterferon

If, as others believe, we are in for "chronic exhilaration", with demand so brisk as to lead much of the time to inflationary gaps, then active fiscal policy will probably mean a bias toward surplus financing and a secular downward trend in the public debt. 1, record 43, English, - chronic%20exhilaration
