A particularly sensitive and accurate type of hygrometer has been developed in recent years by the Instrument Division of the U. S. Weather Bureau. The device, known as the infrared hygrometer, employs a beam of infrared light projected through the air to a photo-electric detector. Two separate wave lengths of light are used; one is absorbed by water vapor and the other passes through undiminished. The ratio of the infrared light transmitted by the different wave lengths is a direct indication of the amount of water vapor in the light path.

Cloud nine is cumulonimbus, a cumulus cloud that develops to a vast height, with rounded masses of white vapor heaped one on the other, the upper parts resembling the shapes of domes, mountains or towers, while the base is practically horizontal.

Maximum evapotranspiration (ETm) was estimated by the water balance method and reference evapotranspiration (ETo) by the following methods: Penman, class A pan, solar radiation and Thornthwaite. The crop coefficient values varied with the method used to estimate the reference evapotranspiration, although they have presented the same trends regardless the method involved.

The CIMIS weather stations use the gathered data in what is known as a "modified Penman" equation to calculate ETo. ETo is one standard for a reference evapotranspiration. It is the ET of a well-watered, lush grass pasture. Other commonly used standards are ETp, which is the ET of a lush, well-watered alfalfa, and ETpan, which is the evaporation from a U. S. Weather Bureau Class A evaporation pan.

It is constructed of galvanized steel and water is maintained within 2-3 in. of the top(...). It is set on timbers so that the bottom is 6 in. above the adjacent ground surface(...). Earth is banked up over the timbers leaving approximately a one-inch space at the top to permit some air circulation under the pan.
