WEATHER CHECK [4 records]

Record 1 2022-02-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Collaboration with the FAO
  • Occupation Names (General)
  • Commercial Fishing
CONT

Master fishers work in the commercial fishing industry managing a fishing vessel and fishing operations to catch and preserve fish, crustacean and molluscs. They operate radio, radar, sonar and other navigational aids, as well as check and interpret weather patterns. Master fishers assist the crew in sorting, cleaning[, ] preserving, stowing and refrigerating their catch. They may also be responsible for the maintenance of their vessel and fishing equipment, and the management of their crew.

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

Cessna-172. Visually check aircraft for general condition during walk-around inspection. In cold weather, remove even small accumulations of frost, ice or snow from wing, tail, and control surfaces. Also make sure that control surfaces contain no internal accumulations of ice or debris. If night flight is planned, check operation of all lights and make sure a flashlight is available.

PHR

Visually check cockpit, engine and gearbox, fuel level, fuel grade markings, fuel quantity, liquid flow, tanks, vacuum pump and line, wing attach and strut.

Record 3 2002-12-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Scientific Research
CONT

A variety of routine observations are utilized in operational analyses for numerical weather prediction ... Adaptive strategies have also been tested and demonstrated to be feasible during FASTEX and NORPEX98, using dropsoundings from research aircraft.

CONT

In advance of the scientific research on the numerical modeling study, it is absolutely necessary to check the model output first. For the mesoscale modeling, the observational data with high temporal and spatial resolution are needed to check the model output besides the conventional data, which can be got from such as satellite, radar, aircraft, drop-sounding, wind profilers and automated meso-net weather stations etc.

OBS

dropsonde: a radiosonde dropped from an aircraft to measure weather conditions during its descent.

Key term(s)
  • drop sounding

Domaine(s)

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Xylology (The Study of Wood)
DEF

A lengthwise separation of the wood that usually extends across the rings of annual growth and commonly results from stresses set up in wood during seasoning.

DEF

A defect found in logs that have been exposed to sun or wind for a long period of time. Sun dries out the wood, causing deep checks on the ends of the log. Heart check, caused by wind, is a radial split along the rays that pass through the center of the log. Weather check is found in logs cut from dead trees. Like sun and wind checks, weather checks are splits in the log, but they are likely to be deeper than the other two.

OBS

check; seasoning check: terms standardized by ISO.

  • Xylologie (Étude des bois)
OBS

OBS
