The new French meteorological radar, ROMUALD, has been operational since October 2001 in French Guiana making it possible to gain two hours in forecasting adverse weather conditions. ROMUALD is the first of a series of nine weather radars that, by 2004, will make up a network covering the Greater Caribbean to make better predictions of intense rainfall, and cyclones. Radar d'observation météorologique d'utilisation aisée localement et à distance. Juchée tout en haut de la Montagne des Pères, à quelques kilomètres de Kourou sur la route de Cayenne, la station météo du Centre Spatial Guyanais vient de se doter d'un nouveau radar plus performant, d'une portée de 400 kilomètres et capable de fournir au centre Météo-France de Cayenne-Rochambeau des données de précipitations toutes les 5 minutes. In late 1997, Environment Canada's Prairie and Northern Region decided to re-organize its weather service program along a "centre of expertise" model. All aviation forecast services were consolidated in Edmonton, along with forecasting responsibility for the Canadian Arctic. The Atlantic Storm Prediction Centre(ASPC) provides timely and accurate weather forecasts, warnings and information to the residents of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Iles de la Madeleine. The Centre is staffed 24 hours a day, 365 days a year to reduce risks to Atlantic Canadians from high-impact weather and other weather related environmental hazards. The Centre is also responsible for an air quality forecast program and the marine and sea state forecasts for the maritime waters out to the 200 mile limit, including most of the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
