In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered.

Since 1994, Environment Canada has relied upon a text-to-voice generating system called AVIPADS(Automated Voice Information Processing and Dissemination System) to deliver its forecasts, hourly weather reports, and a host of other voice products to its own network of ATADs(Automatic Telephone Answering Devices) and weather radios, in English and French. By using a vocabulary of almost 40, 000 words and phrases recorded by a human to give a natural sounding product with proper inflections and intonations and by concatenating them into voice files, AVIPADS now records over almost all of the basic level of service that Environment Canada provides on its voice recording network in both official languages.

The sport of yachting [now sailing] is included in the programme of the Olympic Games since 1896.... One race per day in each event is held for four days. Spare days are then scheduled to allow the organizers the opportunity to catch up on any races postponed or abandoned because of poor weather. The final three races are held one per day after the scheduled spare days. Events are held in seven classes : Finn class, 470 class, Flying Dutchman class, Star class, Soling class, Tornado class and, since 1984, Windglider class(boardsailing).

Remote Automatic Weather Stations measure a number of atmospheric elements including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. The information for these elements are recorded hourly and collected at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. The Western Regional Climate Center receives these data near real-time and continuously updates a historical archive. RAWS sites are primarily owned and maintained by both federal and state land management agencies. Approximately 800 sites are now operational mostly in the western U. S.
