An isobar connects points of equal barometric pressure normalized to sea level while an isohypse connects points of equal geopotential height. Isohypses are also called height contours.

Weather observations at Gander are taken from two locations. The primary observation site is located on the roof of the terminal building; a second observation site is located at ground level about 200 feet from the terminal building. When freezing precipitation is present or suspected, weather observers use an ice accretion indicator composed of a small piece of aluminum alloy similar to that found in aircraft structure. It is placed outside at the observation site and inspected for the presence of freezing precipitation at each observation. Mandatory weather observations are taken every 30 minutes, at the hour and half hour. When freezing precipitation is present, the indicator is removed and a new one installed at each mandatory observation. Prior to installation, the indicator is pre-cooled to ambient temperature. Thus, when observed at the next observation following installation, the indicator shows the type and quantity of freezing precipitation which occurred in the previous 30 minutes.

Freezing fog may not always deposit rime or glaze on the "Ice Accretion Indicator", however if rime or glaze are evident, it positively indicates the presence of super-cooled water droplets and thus freezing rain, freezing drizzle or freezing fog is occurring. Freezing fog creates a significant risk of airframe icing and is therefore very important operational information for forecasters, pilots, flight service specialists, observers, communicators and others.

The night observation device, long-range(NODLR) allows infrared thermal viewing of night or daylight targets during all weather conditions. Infrared thermal technology allows the viewer to "see" heat sources, greatly improving observation in certain conditions such as fog and darkness. Environment Canada has been making use of automated surface weather observation systems since 1969, with the installation of the MARS I(Meteorological Automatic Reporting System) generation of autostations. MARS II followed in 1975, MAPS I(Modular Acquisition Processing System) in 1979 and MAPS II in 1983. In general, these autostations observe and transmit only the basic weather parameters of pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed and direction, although a few have the capability to report cloud, visibility, and precipitation accumulation.

The Environmental Monitoring Division participates in the international marine program and specifically the systems for marine and ocean observation and data collection project. With the support of the Canadian Coast Guard/Fisheries and Oceans Canada, the division maintains a network of nine moored ODAS(Ocean Data Acquisition Systems) buoys along the coasts of Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The buoys collect and transmit hourly weather and sea state data 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Data is transmitted to the GOES satellite then relayed to earth stations where it is entered into the Global Telecommunications System(GTS). Archiving of data is done by the Marine Environmental Data Service(MEDS) of the Department of Fisheries and Oceans and by Environment Canada.

En effet, il s'agit non seulement de décrire le temps à cet instant, mais également d'«initialiser» les modèles de prévision numérique qui visent à simuler, à partir d'un état initial connu, l'évolution dynamique de l'atmosphère. Aussi toutes les stations d'observations synoptiques sont-elles tenues de respecter un horaire commun pour les mesures de surface effectuées toutes les trois heures. Ce réseau doit également, pour remplir correctement les missions qui lui sont dévolues, couvrir l'ensemble de la surface terrestre. [...] Toutes les informations collectées sont [...] codées pour être immédiatement diffusées et échangées internationalement par l'intermédiaire du système mondial de télécommunications. Certaines zones du globe sont malheureusement mal couvertes, notamment les zones désertiques et océaniques.
