WEATHER OBSERVER [4 records]

Record 1 2023-02-23

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
CONT

The Nipher shielded snow gauge was introduced in the 1960s to manned weather stations and is a non-recording gauge with an outside shield that looks like an upside-down bell. This shield reduces air flow over the top of the gauge that might otherwise affect the amount of snow captured. Inside the snow gauge is a copper cylinder that is taken inside by the weather observer and the contents melted to determine the water equivalent of the snow.

CONT

CONT

The... contract aviation weather reporting station is located approximately 4000 feet southwest of the threshold and 800 feet to the left(southeast) of Runway 24L. This site contains all the instruments necessary for the official observer to prepare METARs [aviation routine weather reports], including an anemometer and [a] tipping bucket rain gauge.

DEF

A weather station at which the services of an observer are not required.

CONT

Remote Automatic Weather Stations measure a number of atmospheric elements including temperature, relative humidity, wind speed and direction, and precipitation. The information for these elements are recorded hourly and collected at the National Interagency Fire Center in Boise. The Western Regional Climate Center receives these data near real-time and continuously updates a historical archive. RAWS sites are primarily owned and maintained by both federal and state land management agencies. Approximately 800 sites are now operational mostly in the western U.S.

OBS

RAWS unit measures selected weather elements automatically and is equipped with telemetry apparatus for transmitting the electronically recorded data via radio, satellite or by a landline communication system at predetermined times on a user-requested basis.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

Technique of weather forecasting using only the observations made at a single station.

CONT

Weather forecasting has progressed through three phases-single observer forecasting, the synoptic approach and the current application of computers. The three phases overlap and each still has its part in the overall scheme.... Single observer forecasting... is limited by the amount of information used. We only know what is happening at one location and weather systems can travel great distances-1500 miles or more in 24 hours is not unknown. Experience coupled to observation is very useful but still just one... For thousands of years it was the only possible technique...
