Instead of destroying their fields, we should offer farmers an economic alternative to coca cultivation while continuing vigorous enforcement against the traffickers. Prices for coca leaf fall when such enforcement is sustained. In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered.

  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
CONT

Ground-based weather radars emerged during World War II and have since been used to observe precipitation, mostly over land. Ground-based radars send out pulses of microwave energy in narrow beams that scan in a circular pattern. When the microwave pulse encounters precipitation particles in the atmosphere, the energy is scattered in all directions, sending some energy back to the radar. These measurements are used to estimate intensity, altitude, precipitation type(e. g., rain, snow, hail), and motion. Obtaining continuous measurements of precipitation from ground-based systems(e. g., from rain gauges and radar systems) presents a challenge due to large gaps between monitoring sites on land and huge gaps over the ocean.

Forecast Models : Forecasters use numerical weather models to make their forecasts. These numerical models are classified into four main classes. The first is global models, which focus on the entire northern hemisphere. The second is national models, which focus on the USA. The third is regional models. These regional models have a finer grid than national models and are run out for smaller periods of time. The final class of models is relocatable models, which do not focus on any permanent geographical location. Relocatable models are very limited on the size of the geographical area for which they can forecast, but these models have very high resolutions, or very small forecast grid boxes.

Intentional or unintentional change in the weather caused by human activities.

OBS

weather modification (weather control). The term usually refers to cloud seeding activities, but can also include constructing windbreaks, dissipating fog by the forceful addition of heat or water spray, or preventing frost formation on crops by cloud spray, heating, or mixing processes. Inadvertent weather modification refers to accidental weather effects resulting from the release of greenhouse gases, aerosols, and dust, or changes in albedo or surface properties of the earth associated with urban, industrial, or agricultural activity.

OBS

Schemes for modifying the long-range climate of a region are often referred to as climate control.

OBS

In some sources, "weather control" is considered as a synonym of "weather modification" whereas in the International Glossary of Meteorology(OMMV) it has a separate entry and it is defined as a "Weather modification carried out towards a deliberate end. "

GEODSS requires nighttime and clear weather tracking because of the inherent limitations of an optical system.

filtered equations: A system of approximate hydrodynamical equations from which certain families of solutions [that is certain classes of wave motion (e.g. sound waves or gravity waves)] of the original equations, normally corresponding to timescales shorter than those of interest, are automatically excluded.

CONT

The first numerical weather prediction models used the quasi-geostrophic or Q-G approximation, which consists of using the geostrophic wind for the actual wind everywhere except when computing divergence. The Q-G approximation eliminates both sound and gravity waves as solutions to the equations of motion. The Q-G equations are often referred to as the filtered equations since they filter out sound and gravity waves. This allows a larger time step to be used, as well as eliminating the problem of balancing the initial conditions.

An electronic hand-held weather recording device used, for instance, by car racing teams, sailors, farmers, outdoor and weather enthusiasts.

CONT

... hand held weather stations take about every weather factor into consideration. ... Very sophisticated ones not only measure weather conditions every second but make E.T. or throttle stop predictions every 4 seconds. A sophisticated drag racing weather station will allow you to store data on as many as 256 previous runs and performs an analysis to give you a prediction based on the weather conditions instantly. It can keep and use separate databases for separate vehicles, tracks, or classes. Some of the really sophisticated stations have a prediction deviation function [which] gives a reliability value of the prediction. It gives you a margin of error based on the information in the database that you chose. Within the last few years, windmeters have been added to the weather station box of tricks.

CONT

The Kestrel line of wind meters or anemometers... in less than 60 seconds, provide the answer to the major spraying season question that haunts producers each morning :"How windy is it?" The Kestrel 1000... gives a fast answer to wind speed average and gusts.... the model 2000 will add temperature and for those really cold days on the sprayer, add wind chill to that list. The 3000 adds humidity, dew point and heat stress index.... But for an all out weather station you can hold in the palm of your hand, the Kestrel 4000 provides all of this, in addition to wet bulb, altitude, air density and barometric pressure. Most importantly, 250 of these readings can be recorded in the device's memory and later transferred to the farm computer.... Michael Naughton of Nielsen Keller-man said the company released the 1000 in 1999 with the intention of it being a tool for sailors and outdoor sports and weather enthusiasts. "Farmers are turning out to be a really big part of our business. The 4000 is really popular with them. We were surprised by the demand for little hand-held weather stations, "he said.
