English

Subject field(s)
  • Meteorological Forecasting, Data Measurement and Analysis
DEF

Forecast office with the responsibility for preparing analyses and prognostic charts and/or for preparing forecasts to be disseminated to subordinate stations.

CONT

The Global Hydrology and Climate Center at NASA offers highly detailed studies, data and research on the water cycle, lightning, atmospheric aerosols, atmospheric winds and urban environment. It also houses a large satellite imagery database on the earth's atmosphere, and a weather forecast centre. The data are collected through an array of polar and geostationary satellites.

CONT

A new Weather Forecasting Centre has been established in the UK ... Operating from the Southampton Oceanography Centre (SOC), the main business of the new service is to provide high-accuracy forecasts for offshore oil and gas activities ... Areas covered are all European waters, North and South Atlantic (including the Gulf of Mexico), western Mediterranean and the Caspian.

Record 3 2002-12-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
  • Scientific Research
CONT

A variety of routine observations are utilized in operational analyses for numerical weather prediction ... Adaptive strategies have also been tested and demonstrated to be feasible during FASTEX and NORPEX98, using dropsoundings from research aircraft.

CONT

In advance of the scientific research on the numerical modeling study, it is absolutely necessary to check the model output first. For the mesoscale modeling, the observational data with high temporal and spatial resolution are needed to check the model output besides the conventional data, which can be got from such as satellite, radar, aircraft, drop-sounding, wind profilers and automated meso-net weather stations etc.

OBS

dropsonde: a radiosonde dropped from an aircraft to measure weather conditions during its descent.

Key term(s)
  • drop sounding

CONT
