In an anchorage where there is little or no current or tidal stream, and in reasonably calm weather, a ship may be pointed to lie at an angle with the line of her cable by putting a spring on her cable. First heave in a shackle or so of cable. Now lead a hawser [...] out through the aftermost quarter fairlead, then for’ard and outboard of all, and shackle it with a joggle shackle to the cable outboard of the hawsepipe, thereby forming a spring. Then belay the hawser and veer the cable, and the ship's head should pay off away from the side on which the spring is rove until pointing in the required direction. Alternatively the hawser may be brought to an after capstan and hove in as the cable is veered.

The synoptic code is the WMO standard method for transmitting surface weather information via communications circuits. It is universal in that there are formats for data collected in several units (for wind speed), contains no plain language information (i.e., it is entirely numeric), is always in the same format, etc. There are allowances for each individual country to include national data which are not necessarily of interest to the rest of the world. This code has its own tables, etc., which are for the most part different from those used in the airways code, but is much more systematic ...

The official reference for taking the surface observation for any observer in the United States is the Federal Meteorological Handbook No. 1, published jointly by the US Departments of Commerce (NWS), Transportation (FAA), and Defense (AWS/Navy). Le code synoptique. Ce code est appelé FM 13-IX SHIP lorsqu'il est utilisé pour transmettre des observations similaires effectuées à partir d'une station manuelle ou automatique maritime. Le code synoptique normal comprend six groupes numérotés de 0 à 5, chacun d'entre eux composé d'un code de 5 chiffres. La plupart des groupes des sections 0 à 5 commencent par un indicateur numérique et ces indicateurs sont numéroté successivement à l'intérieur de chaque section. Les indicateurs numériques identifient un groupe particulier contenant toujours les mêmes éléments atmosphériques. De ce fait, l'omission qu'elle soit accidentelle ou volontaire de chacun des groupes ne doit pas empêcher l'identification des autres groupes. De toute façon, le code permet l'omission d'un groupe dont les éléments atmosphériques sont absents ou ne peuvent être observés.
