Carcass rail inspection. Carcasses should be split prior to rail inspection. The rail inspection consists of a careful external and internal examination of dressed carcasses, including visual inspection of the iliac lymph nodes. The spinal cord shall have been completely removed from split carcasses.

When significant deviations are found during any of the above inspections, the carcass shall be tagged and railed out onto the held rail for subsequent veterinary inspection.... Whenever a carcass is held due to a pathological condition which necessitates veterinary inspection, all viscera previously detached, blood(if harvested) and head(if detached) must also be held and made available to the veterinarian. During the rail inspection those carcasses which have trimmable demerits are identified, so that they may be trimmed and the trimmable demerits weighed.

Orbiting Astronomical Observatory(OAO), series of four orbiting observatories launched between 1966 and 1972 by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration(NASA) to provide astronomical data in the ultraviolet and X-ray wavelengths filtered out by the earth's atmosphere. Only two of the four launches were successful, however. OAO-2, launched in 1978, which carried two large telescopes in addition to a cluster of four ultraviolet telescopes, four photoelectric telescopes, and a number of spectrometers and other devices, weighed 4, 200 lb(1, 900 kg) and was the heaviest satellite orbited to that time. Working primarily with ultraviolet radiation, it was able to photograph very young stars. OAO-3, which was also called Copernicus, was launched in 1972. Carrying what was at that time the largest telescope ever orbited and three smaller X-ray telescopes, OAO-3 was primarily used in the study of ultraviolet radiation from interstellar gas and dust and from stars near the edges of the Milky Way.

Many pneumatic systems are mounted on barges which can be towed to a seagoing vessel to discharge the cargo midstream. These barge-mounted pneumatic systems are called floating elevators. In the floating elevator, once the grain passes through the rotating airlock, it is weighed before being discharged into a barge or smaller ship.

Most floating elevators have four succion pipes with a total discharging capability of between 250 and 400 tonnes per hour. The main advantage of the floating elevator is its mobility. The main disadvantage is the time lost both in moving the elevator from ship to ship and moving the barges or smaller ships to the elevator. However, they are used extensively in Europe.

Component of mixing plant in which materials are mixed together.

Two types of plants are used to make hot mix asphalt concrete, the batch type mixing plant and the drum mix plant A batch plant mixes, then drops individual batches of hot mix asphalt concrete and a drum mix plant is a continuous flow type of production plant. In a batch type mixing plant different sizes of aggregates are drawn from a multi-bin cold feed system into an enclosed counter flow rotary drum. After the aggregate is dried, it is lifted to the top of the batching tower and on to a screen system which separates the aggregate into different sizes and then drops the different sizes into individual bins. Aggregate is then drawn from the hot bins in predetermined amounts, weighed and dropped into a pug mill mixer with the correct amount of liquid asphalt. The batch is mixed, then dropped into a waiting truck or sent to a surge bin until trucks arrive. In a drum mix plant a metered, four compartment, cold feed bin system supplies the exact amount of the required size of aggregates to the rotating drum mixer The drum mixer is an inclined, parallel flow dryer/mixer in which the aggregate is dried and heated in the upper section of the drum, then mixed with liquid in the lower part of the drum. From the drum the hot mix is discharged into a hot elevator which lifts the finished product to a surge hopper or storage silo both equipped to load trucks.
