It is used to provide stability and maneuverability during a voyage when ships are not carrying cargo, not carrying heavy enough cargo, or when more stability is required due to rough seas. Ballast water may also be used to add weight so that a ship sinks low enough in the water to pass under bridges and other structures.

DU counterweights have been used primarily in wide-body aircraft on rudders outboard ailerons(wing assembly), and outboard elevators(tail assembly). Counterweights come in variety of weights and shapes, and numerous weights and shapes are used in some aircraft. The DU counterweight can range in weight from 0. 23 to 77 kg. Some aircraft used for military and cargo also use DU counterweights; these include the Lockheed C-130 and C-141, Jetstar, and S-3A. The Boeing Company produced helicopters utilizing DU as a rotor tip weight prior to 1979. These weights consisted of small 0. 22-kg triangular weights.

A ship that has experienced hogging is said to be hogged. Instead of showing a flat, level hull line, a hogged ship is "curved", with the bow and stern lower than the center of the ship.

OBS

Hogging occurs because the bow and stern of the ship, while carrying a considerable amount of heavy equipment, possesses relatively little buoyancy. The center of the ship, on the other hand, possesses a great deal of buoyancy and may be quite light-weight if the ship is not loaded with heavy cargo or ballast. This unequal distribution of forces, with great weights but little buoyancy fore and aft, and little weight but great buoyancy amidships, leads to deformation of the hull.

Finally, some SUVs and pickups are so large(greater than 8, 500 lbs. GVWR [gross vehicle weight rating]) that they do not qualify as "light trucks" under the current standards. Even when the designer has settled the size and angle of the tail plane, the force which it will experience will be outside the control of the pilot, and although they may automatically compensate for such things as changes in pitching moment on the main planes, they cannot possibly deal with changes of weight such as are caused by the dropping of bombs, consumption of fuel, and changes in the disposition of passengers and cargo. For this reason the adjustable tail plane was introduced, this being operated by an actuating gear and controlled by a wheel or lever in the pilot's cockpit. This enabled the pilot to alter the angle of setting of the tail plane during flight and so cause downward or upward forces upon it at will, thus balancing the aeroplane under all conditions.
