Underwater weighing, or hydrostatic weighing, is an assessment of body composition based on the determination of body density of densitometry. To determine the density of the body, the athlete is first weighed on land and is then submerged in a tank of water to determine his or her underwater weight... The basic premise of this technique is that fat-free mass sinks and fat floats; therefore, the more the body weighs in the water, the less fat within the body. 3, record 2, English, - hydrostatic%20weighing

One of the important aspects determining nutrient requirements is feed intake. If an animal is consuming more total feed per day than normal, the level of nutrients, per unit weight, can be reduced. If the animal is consuming less feed than would normally be the case, then to satisfy the requirements, the nutrient density should be increased. Since the dietary intake is related in many cases to energy content, the nutrient content of the diet will vary depending on energy level. 4, record 5, English, - feed%20intake

4, record 5, French, - prise%20alimentaire

Normal thermal stratification of a pond, if it is to occur, generally begins in May or early June and ends in September or early October. Ponds can stratify because water attains maximum density at 39°F. It becomes less dense(lighter in weight) both above and below 39°F. Soon after the ice melts in the early spring, the water temperature throughout the pond rises to 32°F. Winds blowing across the pond's surface cause the water to pile up on the downwind side. The water moves downward, across the pond bottom, to the upwind side. The entire pond begins to circulate from top to bottom, maintaining a uniform temperature. As long as winds are strong enough, the pond temperature will remain uniform, even as the pond begins to warm during spring. This is a period known as "spring overturn. " 5, record 7, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
When surface water reaches 39 degrees in spring, it becomes heavier than the water immediately below it and therefore sinks. The downward movement of surface water forces water in the deeper parts of the lake upward. The resulting circulation of water is called spring turnover. Spring winds also help promote water circulation. 2, record 7, English, - spring%20overturn
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 1 OBS
turnover: A phenomenon usually occurring in spring and fall because of the increase in density of water above and below the temperature of minimum density. In the spring, as the surface of the water warms above the freezing point, the water increases in density, becomes heavier, and tends to sink, producing vertical currents, while in the fall, as the surface water becomes colder and therefore heavier, it also tends to sink. Also see overturning. 6, record 7, English, - spring%20overturn

According to... the "Standard Proctor test"... a sample of soil is dried, pulverized and separated into two fractions by a no. 4 sieve. About 6 lb of the finer fraction are moistened with a small quantity of water and thoroughly mixed to produce a damp aggregate that is then packed, in three equal layers, into a cylindrical container of specified dimensions. Each layer is compacted by 25 blows of a standard tamper that is allowed to fall from a height of 1 ft. When the cylinder has been filled and struck off level at the top, the weight and the water content of the damp soil of the container are determined. By means of these quantities, the dry density can be computed. In a similar manner the dry density is determined for successively damper mixtures of the aggregate, until the dry density after compaction decreases conspicuously with increasing water content. A curve is plotted showing the relation between dry density and water content. 3, record 10, English, - standard%20Proctor%2Dtest

Immobilization of enzymes by crystallization and subsequent cross-linking provides structures which have a regular three-dimensional molecular arrangement, and a high packing density. Such structures are useful for both X-ray diffraction analysis, and also physico-chemical studies of enzymes in the solid state. An important feature of the enzyme crystals is that they have large liquid-filled channels surrounding the individual protein molecules, therefore, as in dilute solution, most of the surface of the enzyme is in contact with the surrounding solvent. Since the channels are permeable to low molecular weight solutes, it is possible to study the properties of enzymes in crystals in much the same way as when in solution. Lysosyme is an... enzyme whose catalytic mechanism is being studied. X-ray analysis of the crystalline enzyme shows that it contains a long cleft as its active site, which can accommodate its normal substrate, the long-chain peptidoglycan of bacterial cell walls. 3, record 14, English, - crystalline%20enzyme

An instrument which responds to density changes in the gas stream, directly related to the molecular weights. Several forms of gas density balance have been developed since this type of detector was first introduced by Martin and James. Improvements in instrumentation have led to a revival of interest in it as a detector system suitable for molecular-weight studies. The density changes are measured by means of a form of U-tube, one limb of which contains pure carrier gas and the other column effluent gas. An anemometer situated between the two limbs detects and measures any density difference. Using nitrogen or argon carrier gas the limit of detection is 0. 4 μg, response is linear with concentration, and it can be used for molecular weight determinations for values below 200 and for percentage composition studies. 5, record 16, English, - gas%20density%20balance

A tipping bucket rain gage consists of a funnel and a rocker mechanism with two little "buckets" on it, located underneath the funnel. When rain falls into the funnel, it fills one of the little buckets on the rocker mechanism. Once a given amount of rain falls into the funnel, usually 0.01 inches, the rocker "tips" over, emptying one of the buckets and moving the other one underneath the funnel. A recorder in the gage records each tip and the time it occurred. The tipping bucket gage has its disadvantages, however. It cannot be used in freezing weather because the mechanism or the funnel hole can freeze solid. The first type of gyroscopic instrument to successfully reduce gimbal bearing friction to an acceptable level for precision applications was the floated gyroscope. In this instrument the rotating member is sealed within a hollow cylinder which forms the inner gimbal of the gyro. This is mounted in the gyro case whith a fluid surrounding the cylinder; the density of the fluid is chosen so as to exactly float the cylinder, thus removing the weight of the inner gimbal from the bearings and greatly relieving the bearing frictional load. 2, record 31, English, - floated%20gyroscope

The first type of gyroscopic instrument to successfully reduce gimbal bearing friction to an acceptable level for precision applications was the floated gyroscope. In this instrument the rotating member is sealed within a hollow cylinder which forms the inner gimbal of the gyro. This is mounted in the gyro case with a fluid surrounding the cylinder; the density of the fluid is chosen so as to exactly float the cylinder, thus removing the weight of the inner gimbal from the bearings and greatly relieving the bearing frictional load. 1, record 35, English, - gimbal%20bearing%20friction
