Record 1 2014-10-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Grain Growing
  • Milling and Cereal Industries
  • Agricultural Economics
CONT

[Binburnt] kernels resemble fireburnt kernels in colour; however, in cross-section, the binburnt kernel maintains its dense structure and appears smooth and glossy, unlike a fireburnt kernel, which looks like charcoal in cross-section, has numerous air holes, and crumbles easily under pressure; binburnt kernels are caused by gradual heating in storage and have not been exposed to temperatures approaching ignition; the weight of a binburnt kernel is similar to that of a sound kernel of comparable size(Official Grain Grading Guide).

CONT

Three methods for determining organic matter are given below. The first is the classical Walkley-Black method.... The third method of estimating soil organic matter, loss of weight on ignition, is included because of hazards associated with the use of Cr2O72-. This ion in a strong acid medium is a powerful oxidant. It is corrosive to skin, mucous membranes, the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract. It may create a cancer risk. Some municipalities restrict the amount of Cr that can be discharged into the sewage system. For these reasons, alternative procedures not involving Cr2O72-have been sought.
