A unit of area equivalent to 112 sheets 14 by 20 in. or 31,360 in.² (217.78 ft²). 4, record 2, English, - base%20box
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Tin plate is now sold both on a weight per unit area basis and on a thickness basis. The old unit of area is the base box, equal to the area of 112 sheets, 14 by 20 inches, or 31 360 square inches (217.78 square feet). The new unit of thickness is the millimetre and the corresponding area designation for pricing and weight or area calculations is the SITA (System International Tin Plate Area) which equals 100 square metres or 4.9426 base boxes. ... The use of symbols to designate gage was displaced by the use of base weights (or basis weights) expressed in pounds per base box that also indicated the approximate thickness of the tin-mill product ... With the recent introduction of the metric system (SI) in production, gage is the basic unit for specification and area becomes only a derived value for commercial usage. 2, record 2, English, - base%20box
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Tinplate sheets used to manufacture cans and boxes were originally packed into wooden boxes in order to protect the polished tin surface. Sheets cut to 35 cm X 50 cm(14 X 20 in) and of 0. 3 mm thickness weighed approx. 454 g(1 lb) and 112 were packed into a box, known as the "basis box". Variation in thickness of sheet cut to the same size would vary the weight, and larger sizes were made, although these were then called "tinned sheets". Modern production techniques favour reeling into rools for shipment, and protection with interleaving of paper or plastic where necessary. 3, record 2, English, - base%20box

Fer blanc (tin plate). [...]

Determination of the effective opening size, dw, FIH. The effective opening size of a geotextile, dw, is determined by wet sieving quartz sand of known composition using modified sieving equipment. The geotextile functions as a sieve.... The test sample,(diameter 18 cm), is clamped into a sieve frame. The sand, which has a dry weight of 100 g for wovens and a dry weight of 300 g for non-wovens, is then sprinkled onto the sample. The sand is then sprayed continuously with water and sieved for 15 minutes in a modified sieve machine with a vertical amplitude of 3 mm at a frequency of 50 Hz. The sand which passes through the geotextile sample is caught on a paper filter and then analyzed with [different sieves].... The effective opening size, dw, is found from the coarsest sand fraction which has passed through the test sample and in which there is still a defined quantity in relation to the original fraction. 4, record 17, English, - effective%20opening%20size

The third technique for determining the pore size distribution is based upon wet sieving. Again, there are several variations on the basic concept .... The FIH (Franzius Institut Hanover] method determines a parameter known as the "Wet Sieving Effective opening Size" (Dw), which is sometimes considered approximately equivalent to the 90% opening size .... However, as test results obtained by Heerten demonstrate this relationship is neither accurate nor consistent. 3, record 17, English, - effective%20opening%20size

One of the most profitable and competitive sectors of the paper industry is the "soft" tissue market. Here, the customer pays for bulk and softness, and the producer finds himself in the happy position of being able to charge a higher price for a product which actually contains a lower weight of fiber. Naturally, there has been considerable incentive to develop proprietary low-density manufacturing techniques which will give a competitive edge; and those companies engaged in soft tissue production are reluctant to divulge their methodology. 1, record 30, English, - low%2Ddensity%20forming

1, record 33, French, - pression%20lin%C3%A9aire%20dans%20la%20pince

((Metering and blending of furnishes)) The machine chest typically contains the final furnish mixture, although in some instances, small concentrations of additives may be added just prior to the headbox. The machine chest stock(at 2. 6-2. 8 % consistency) is continuously circulated to a constant head tank(stuff box) which feeds the stock through a control valve(called the "basis weight valve") into the paper machine approach system. Here, the stock is combined with circulating white water from the wire pit, and the consistency is dramatically reduced to the level(typically 1 % or less) required at the headbox. 1, record 37, English, - basis%20weight%20valve
